@all

would anyone support and develop such a thing?
how hard is it to get driver sources these days ?

i posted this in another thread, not much response so i'll try one more time but this time with a dedicated thread.
-------------------------------

i'd donate lots and lots for scanner and printer drivers, they can be for every Amiga oriented format (Aros,MorphOS,OS3.x etc) too but it does'nt have to as i only need for OS4.

would be lovely if they would work with current Amiga programs if possible.

Some years ago i started to port CUPS but i gave up as it was way over my head even though i did manage to control my printer although far from in any useable form....

Turboprint and that scanner package from IOspirit do work but they haven't been updated in ages and driver wise it only covers really old stuff that you will have trouble finding.

Correct me if i am wrong.

@Toaks
I would be willing to chip in for a bounty.I personally use Canon all-in-one printers,both wired and wireless because they are very inexpesive and last for a long time.Also the ink is cheaper than HP printers by far.

Problem is to find a programmer for it. To raise money is no problem.

Yep, I use Epson gear (both scanners and printers) and would donate to a bounty that covers my specific models. My printer isn't the cheapest to run and regularly suffers from clogged nozzels, but even at 6 years old, I've still to see another printer outside the professional bracket that gives a similar quality output.

At the moment, I have it connected to my PC and shared on the network, and I have to use a funky dummy-postscript printer, Ghostview and LPD to get it to print from the Amiga side - and even then I've very little control over it. A proper driver woul be awesome!

@joeled

that depends really,if its lets say limited to OS4 then maybe some devs would do it to include in OS4 or whatever etc.

i'd like to think that one of the reasons in Amiga land these days is that its gotta be worthwhile for the dev itself or for a lump of cash and user feedback.

We used to be so many, now we are not.
Bounty or not,will determine if we get it or not.

umm...

@all
i keep seeing devices that support EPSON, my PS3,My Phone,My router etc, i dunno why but i guess the license or something is quite cheap or whatever compared to canon/hp etc.

@daedalus

hmm, postscript method , i'd like to try that.
How do you use your scanner ?

@Toaks

It may be an idea to port the SANE scanner drivers to amigaos (it is all open source as well).

The URL for SANE is below

@Toaks

Yep, it's a fiddly thing to set up, but it works in greyscale for me at least (I haven't tried to get colour working yet). Here's the guide I used to set it up.
I only really use my scanner with the PC, so I've never tried to set it up on the Amiga, but there is a version of SANE which works under AmiCygnix. Not ideal, but it's definitely a workable solution!

Edit:
@TheodoreTwinky

There's an AmiCygnix port of SANE already which apparently works quite well. Not sure if it would be a lot of work to port a native version, but the AmiCygnix version would be a good place to start...

@Printer

OS4 developers often talk about Printer support, before we start here, lets check how high printer support is on their priority list (quiet high I guess)

I'd rather invest 100-200 € Euros in an Amiga (Postscript) compatible printer, then into a bounty

quiet a lot of printermanufactures donnot puplish driver information etc... so quiet hard

@Scanner
SANE drivers (backends) are to some extend "open source" and can be compiled/used for Amiga like OSes. SCANdal on morphos and AmigaOS uses a few, also Amycygnix uses those scanners. I guess, if you have a SANE supported model, it wouldn't be to hard for AmiCygnix Author to compile, I guess- A little donation for Edgar would be wellcome here.... The Scanner GUI (SANE Frontend) is not sluggish as it is just a "basic" and not overloaded GUI. So it will even work very well on lowspec Amigas.

Problem is, that quiet a lot of modern scanners are "Linux/SANE" compatible, but are not completely open source. So little bits and pieces (libs) are only available as x86 compiled version. I did not even get one All-In-One Colorprinter/Scanner to work with PPC Linux/neither AmigaOS (Scannerwise).

Most Scanners either support scanning to FTP, Samba Share, MemoryCard or offer a Scanner Webinterface

In my opinion we should invest somewhere else !

@TheodoreTwinky

Thanks, i knew there was one but couldnt remember the name!
Thanks for the heads up!.

@daedalus

MY GOD!, i didnt know about amicygnix had support for this!
i will try my scanners when i get home from work!

@geograph

thanks for the info, i will get in touch with my old friend Edgar about this and i will ask him if he'd be interesting in doing a native version for a lump of cash
i knew there was issues with owners of the printers etc would be a problem regarding source code for their drivers , i used to be in contact with a guy at HP and 1 at Canon as well back when i was focusing on these things (2005 or thereabouts).

i guess a bounty would be nice for SANE port to OS4 and maybe even the other Amiga oriented OS's like AROS , Morphos and ofcourse our good old 68 stuff :)

Hmm, you mention about the scanners itself these days can do it and then send to ftp or whatever.??? , i thought you had to control it via an external interface?
I will check and some new models in the shop, thanks for the tip!.

@Toaks

A year ago Michal Zukowski put the soursecode of SCANdal on SF or GIT and asked for
help with porting it to OS4. http://utilitybase.com/forum/index.php?action=vthread&forum=2&topic=2210#msg18216
Sadly Utilitybase is down,and I can´t find the link to the code.

CUPS would be great due it's wide hardware support. Funnily enough there seems to be 1234 printer drivers for it on it's main site
