It's the little board I wanted and it came in at a price I was prepared to pay. I wanted an integrated board, passive cooling for silent/low power running.

It was the board I was looking at for a while, but being a classic user wasn't up for paying a full price. A nice little machine just to tinker with OS4!

Better get a case with a fanless PSU and SSD next!

@A1200

So it was YOU that stole the auction win away from me!

(Actually my bid was really low so I'm not surpirsed that I didn't win)

I hope you have a lot of fun with it :)

Thanks all. If anyone has some suggestions for a silent case and drive, please let me know. I do have a small mini itx case already but it has an Intel Atom board etc already in it. Ideally I would like an internal DVD drive and something like a 64MB SSD (I have one in my Lenovo X301 and it is excellent).

Ideas on a postcard (I am in the UK so need to be UK market or cheap shipping).

Man, you made a bargain there. The price is extremely low.

Is this carvedeye's Sam btw? Did he bought a new/faster AOS4.1 system and sold his Ep?

@A1200

Congratulations on your purchase of a SAM440EP! It's a very nice piece of hardware. :)

I'm pretty sure it is Carvedeye's machine, as I recognized the name he uses on e-Bay.

gday !
If ur wanting a decent individual case for it, you can't go past an x500+ case that loriano is bringing out. Google the website.

@A1200

I put a Sam 440 in a plastic case some years ago (along with a 250 GB 2.5" drive and a DC-DC converter). I hoped that natural venting in the case would be sufficient, but it wasn't.

I then added a 50 mm fan at the rear, running from 5V, and drilled a lot of holes in the front to let the warm air out. It was still silent, and still overheated.

Lately I've relented and upped the fan to its "normal" 12V. It screams like a banshee, but at least the CPU doesn't crash after an hour of running.

My next trick will be to add a temperature speed control to it. That should allow it to run more slowly over the approaching winter.

Moral: you will need lots of ventilation, probably forced.

@all

I had great fun with the sam but due to my addiction to my a1200t i simply did not have time for the sam, plus........ i was in desperate need of a new gaming pc so decided to sell ( along with my iphone and other stuff ) but it was a sacrifice i was willing to make as i still have my classic system

@carvedeye

I will certainly send lots of pics when it lands in a new case running OS4!

Thanks very much.

Well the package has arrived and I have registered OS4.1 with Hyperion.

On the download area I have downloaded all files available to me:

Sam440InstallCD-Upd1.lha
AmigaOS4.1Update2.lha
AmigaOS4.1Update3.lha
AmigaOS4.1Update4.lha
ELF_QuickFix-53.2.lha
IDE_QuickFix_SAM440ep-53.3.lha
QuickFix_Sam440ep-53.8.lha
... and obviously I have the CD.

To save time, what is the best order to install i.e. do I use the CD then install the updates/patches in order or do I use InstallCDUpd1 and then update recursively?

Cheers!

The first in the row is a fully featured OS install CD - this is the one to start with. After that Update 2 - 3 can be installed over Update 1. The rest in your list (including your original OS CD) is "history" and not needed to set up a current system.

potential obstacles:

- caution with attaching your monitor through HDMI/VGA adapter or direct HDMI connection; sometimes the OS can't recognize the monitor modes correctly, but it is solvable.
- in the first versions of OS install (don't know which) AHI sound output was fully muted by default, so the users thought their SAM sound subsystem maybe broken - apparently it wasn't....
- after the install (maybe directly after the Update 1 CD install) you should check your NVRAM settings in UBoot.
- be aware of the fact that your main boot HD and your bootable optical drive should be attached to specific SATA ports (see manual).
- same is true for you mouse an keyboard and the corresponding USB ports - see manual as well.

Don't bother with the quick fixes. They're old and superseded by the updates. I should move them to an "old files" directory.
