Well, pricewise the comparison is not that unfair, since you can get a pretty much cutting edge machine for the price of one X1000.

Thanks for digging this up. Unfortunately I don't "parlo Italiano" so I will have to your word for the content.
I suppose we should be grateful for any publicity, even if it is bad?
I was going to post a reply with my "rose tinted" glasses removed but I decided against it. All I wish to say is:-
The cost of designing, developing and manfacturing custom built "Amiga" hardware in Europe which is designed to run the AmigaOS (and Debian Squeeze) is very high compared to mass produced off-the-shelf x86 hardware bulit in China which runs Linux Mint and NOT the AmigaOS.
Whichever way you dress it up those are the facts. Fortunately, most Amiga users know this already.

A lot would be forgiven me thinks if the machine was actually for sale to the general public rather than the first come, first served pre-order brigade! I mean it's good your selling every machine you make but talk about low supply high demand |

It's sad you have to ask when you'll get an opportunity to buy a X1000 and not when will I be able to get one! The two dates could be months apart and the 1st date could be weeks from now simply to pre-order the machine. I hope it's worth it! |

Perhaps the supply problem will improve, once the drivers and software for the hardware design is really finished.
I could be wrong, but the way I see it is that the First Contact X1000 systems are pre-release products for early adopters and a review of an incomplete product is not fair, unless the reviewer clearly indicates such in his writing.
Comparisons to completely unrelated computers and unrelated operating systems is useless. I think everyone here can agree that AmigaOS is, and has always been very different than other main stream operating systems. Comparing AmigaOS4 and computers that it runs on with operating systems that have thousands of people working on them and computers that cannot run the latest version of AmigaOS, is also just as useless. Any comparison to, or even mention of a company who's only claim to anything interesting is that they made a copy of an antique computer case design and purchased the rights to use a couple of old brand names that have both gone out of business due to mismanagement and stupid decisions, is equally useless and just shows the ignorance of the writer, about what he is reviewing, or writing about. Easy to say if you're not the one holding the bag to pay for a batch run. At the price, it is considered a special/custom order system._________________ X1000! Party on Pure Gold Hate tends to make you look stupid... |

very low level article, bad written and low on grammar as well. |
Sorry, I am an Italian native speaker as well. Care to point out exactly where the grammar is particularly low, please? Because as far as I can see, this is a fair article from an half outsider (someone that had an Amiga long ago and still follows the scene - i.e. AROS) and making empty accusations on the grammar might make some non-italian speaking people happy but it is not really that much intellectually honest. Unless you can point us to these clear flaws in the article, that is... I might not agree 100% with what the writer says, but still it makes sense. And accusing him of low grammar... well, it doesn't, at least in my book..
Kind regards, Andrea |

Not even worth thinking about.
With all the challenges you faced and the negative attitudes toward the project..... well, screw'em. You did good, and that alone will speak more than their small worthless opinions.
Keep the party going. It will stick in their craw like a sharp stick.

| To my understanding x1000 is similarly priced as expandable Apple tower models, even though Apple uses x86 and sells 1000x more units. (apple identical x86 PC costs 1/10 when built from off-the-self components, x1000 can not be built off-the-self) So, in that respect, x1000 price is ok. Performance wise x1000 is behind Apple HW, sure.
Another matter is that we need more affordable HW to expand the community. Last edited by KimmoK on 05-Apr-2012 at 06:46 AM.

Have to say, Trevor, that however there is something positive to consider. The article have moved many "hidden" old time amigans raising a little their curiosity.
"not all silver lining" don't know if this way to say is correct for this situation.

Hardware vice I don't think you find any PowerMac hardware whit SATA2, I don't know about PCIe, there are many things can be improved in the drivers._________________ Software developer and forum troll. Please check out my software: Excalibur, Basilisk 2, AmigaInputAnywhere. |

From what I was able to understand from Google Translate my comment on the article is:
Quote:
Dear Ceasar, The criticism of X1000 is arguable by price / performance and unfinished drivers. What is somehow lost in the article is: a) that hardware specification is exact as announced, it is the final version of the board, it is AmigaOS that needs a catch up.
b) If you were tracking the X1000 odyssey it was known it will be such high price. It turned to be a bit more, so like you say basic early bird system price was with 500GB hard drive,1GB RAM and with no AmigaOS price included. However, OS is 100 euros more where you get both OS 4.1.5 and future 4.2 licence (all in one 200 euros worth)
c) Since this is early bird system benchmarks on AmigaOS are not realistic: they use beta drivers and single core. Debian Squeeze tests might be a different matter.
d) Mentioned 1GB RAM as handicapped looks like it, but then 1GB is perfect amount of RAM for OS4 and Debian Squeeze. This was done just to further minimize the price, since system needed additional network and sound card due to drivers problem. Its an earlybird beta system in software turns, and with OS 4.2, 3D RadeonHD drivers and board drivers it will perform way better, even if SMP and 64-bit don`t come at first.
e) In small and niche Amiga World, only system to compare X1000 to is SAM460 by Acube. Similar SAM 460 aka AmigaOne 500 system costs about half of X1000 price and X1000 board is far more expandable, dual core and even in single core about 2x faster (see test). In those terms X1000 is equal or better investment for those who want it and will invest in OS4 system. f) Please don`t compare it with C=USA products. That is something this Ami4be user will do. |

No, seriously, X1000 is designed for AOS4 (and of course AOS4 user). It is not designed for the mainstream. That is the same as you would compare FPGA Arcade with standard hardware. Or to take a example say to a Oldtimer fan that he wastes his money because he could get a new car for the money (of course I do not want to say AOS is for oldtimers ).
