I'm very sad to report fellow Amiga user and "Men at Work" band member Greg Ham passed away. It's been ages since we traded emails on music and Amiga topics, but Greg maintained an A3000 with multiple Sunrize 512 audio cards running Bars-N-Pipes in his personal studio for many years for his music projects. One of the studio tracks on Men at Work's Brazil (live '96) album was fully recorded on the Amiga equipment.

Condolences to his family.

Greg is far left in the photo.

@pavlor

I hope this wasn't a suicide related to that law suit over royalties for "Down Under".

Wow! I didn't know this. And this was a famous Amiga musician in my country. Why is it we find out these tihngs too late!?

I knew Men at Work, I didn't know of Greg Ham in particular, and I just found out he used Amigas! What a day.

The article is written in a tone that seems to suggest Greg's comments could be related to today's news, but I'm doubtful of that. Also the final judgement was small on the scale of things.

"on 6 July 2010 Justice Jacobson awarded the company [owners of Kookaburra] 5 per cent of royalties [for "Down Under"] backdated to 2002—believed to be a six-figure sum"

I'll be more sad if they find foul play involved.

Many years ago Greg hinted at releasing other Amiga based material, but I'm not aware of any that was. Our spotty emails began around 1996 and the last was perhaps 2004. The Brazil track was the only one he ever confirmed to me.

I guess he'd been considered a major lurker. He was a big fan of Bars-N-Pipes and by extention the Amiga. He was apparently aware of the Amiga sites as that's how he came to contact me originally on music based topics. I don't know if he ever had an account in Amigaland, but he did say his business and touring/traveling left little time for anything else. I recall email responses as delayed as much as 8 months.

Quote from the article by Greg Ham...

Quote:
"It has destroyed so much of my song," he told Melbourne's The Age newspaper after the court ruling. "It will be the way the song is remembered, and I hate that. I'm terribly disappointed that that's the way I'm going to be remembered -- for copying something."
...

No to me it won't "Down Under" is one of the catchiest & timeless pieces of pop music ever and I will always remember it as such...

R.I.P and thanks for one of my favourite songs of all time...

"Men at Work" is one of my favorite bands. I remember Grem Ham the most from the "Dr. Heckle and Mr. Jive video". It makes me sad that he's gone, but I know everyone must pass on some day.

He was an Amiga user too? Now I hate Larrikan even more, if that's possible.

By the way, I always thought that flute solo sounded more like "What Do We Do With A Drunken Sailor" than Kookaburra.

Apparently, Larrikan have been getting some nasty but well-deserved phone calls today.

What I haven't seen mentioned is the Sound Unlimited Posse. The Aussie rap band. They sampled this exact flute sections and I haven't see anything on the news about it! Are they going to be sued as well? Or did I just accidently tip the bad guys off who read amigaworld.net?

Does Australia still make rap music? Ther only thing I've heard lately is some outfit on the radio that sounds amateurish and I wonder how they get any airplay. Sorry gone off topic.

RIP. One of my favorite bands from the 80s. My favorite tune was It's a Mistake, fit in so well with a FRPG I was playing in at the time.
