Buddha not autobooting under kickstart 1.3 on A2000

Hi All,

I am trying to get a Buddha Pheonix Edition IDE to work under kickstart 1.3 on an Amiga 2000...and no luck. I would like to ask for some help from some more knowledgeable people on here than me!

BTW, Yes, I know I can run under wb3.9 using kickstart 3.1 and indeed the hard disk has a secondary priority partition (FFS) to boot just that configuration. I want to run 1.3 too.

I have a 80GB IDE HD setup with two partitions, DH0 (2Gb - FFS) running OS3.9, and DH1 (2Gb - FFS) running Workbench 1.3. The rest is SFS formatted for use under 3.9 but I don't expect this to be visible under 1.3, just the 2Gb DH0 and 2Gb DH1 (within the 4Gb IDE barrier) I expect to see and use under 1.3.

I copied the 1.3 HD file setup from my original SCSI HD on the A2091 before I removed the old drive. The SCSI 1.3 HD booted fine, but I wanted more space to be available and using v6.6 of the SCSI ROM on the 2091 stops me using a bigger SCSI disk than 1Gb. I don't have v7 ROM or bigger SCSI HD, hence using the Buddha since I have plenty of IDE HD's floating around.

For completeness I have a A2000 Rev 6 Motherboard, ROM Switcher 1.3/2.1/3.1 on board, MegAChip 2MB Chip upgrade installed, 8-UP Memory card fully populated 8MB, Two internal floppy drives, SCSI CDROM and 2630 Accelerator with MMU and 2MB (disabled), 2091 SCSI card (with autoboot disabled), and Indivision ECS. I took out the Picasso II I had installed as it says it is not compatible with 1.3.

The buddha autoboots the hard disk fine under kickstart 3.1, but not 1.3. When in 1.3 mode, the system intialises ok and comes up with a white screen to start booting, and hangs at this point. If I take out the buddha card, it gives me the Disk prompt as expected.

I double checked the partitions in hdtoolbox under 3.9 to ensure that the DH1 parition is set to boot as 1st priority, which it is. I then rom switched to 3.1 and confirmed I can boot from the 1.3 hd as first priority no problem. But it still doesn't boot this drive from 1.3.

From the Buddha documentation it says it supports autoboot under 1.3, however I can't get it to work, and really want it to work. Any ideas on what else I can try here?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Catcha,
Epsilon

As an update on this issue, I have since tried the following steps:

I added the older SCSI 1Gb HD back into the A2000 system and re-enabled autoboot on the A2091. Confirmed it can boot 1.3 off this hd, but not if the buddha is running. If I unplug the buddha it works fine.

I then added a FFS formatted OS3.9 2.5Gb IDE HD to the buddha just in case it didn't like the large hd under 1.3, but the system will not boot in 1.3 off the SCSI 1Gb hd with this 2.5Gb IDE drive attached to the buddha. It works fine under 3.1 kickstart and I can see both 1Gb SCSI and 2.5Gb IDE drives in this configuration.

From this I can only conclude that the buddha does not support autoboot under 1.3, contrary to the claims on the product advertising, which if true is very disappointing. I don't want to believe this, and I hope I have just missed something.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. If anyone has got buddha on 1.3 kickstart booting a IDE HD into Workbench 1.3, please let me know what configuration you have...

@Epsilon

I'll be trying the same one day. I have Buddha flash to put on my A2000.
After quick search I did not find 1.3 specific instructions/tricks.
(IIRC, there was some)

I would try with OFS and with smaller than 512MB partition with 1.3.

(computers (x86 BIOSes) have had some hickups in handling 512MB, 2GB, 4GB, 32GB barriers, not surpriced if 1.3 has some as well)

btw... is there IDE to "oldSCSI1" converters anywhere?
(IIRC, I have some SCSI cards as well somewhere)

@KimmoK

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated - I found an article that might have been what you were thinking of (see below)!

@All

As a quick update, I have found an forum article here about booting 1.3 HD's on Buddha, which taught me a lot more about RDB and FFS filesystem requirements under 1.3 and above. For example, having to have the filesystem driver in the RDB of the hard disk under 1.3 for booting, and the filesystem used to format the drive needing to be from the same version of workbench used to create the RDB file system on the HD...interesting stuff!

They suggested changing the RDB FFS driver to a OS2.04/2.1 FFS driver via 2.1 installer HDToolbox, which I did, but unfortunately it didn't fix the problem and the IDE disk still wouldn't boot under 1.3. After a lot more mucking around with it over many hours, creating/deleting smaller and smaller partitions copying hd contents around, I decided to go back to my original working 1.3/3.9 setup. This is a 1Gb SCSI HD connected to 2091 SCSI controller with two bootable partitions of 512MB each, running FFS RDB created and formatted under OS3.1 using that FFS driver. I think this proves the FFS driver in RDB and FFS used to format is not the issue for me, unlike the article's solution that worked. Shame really.

They mentioned "The FFS on the RDB kept filing itself as 444f5303 instead of 444f5301". This is a real gotcha I found too. If you do this fix yourself on a HD make sure you modify the FFS driver value manually to the expected FFS value when adding to the RDB as the value is different to FFS on insertion and shows up as CFS/01 rather than FFS.

Perhaps I need to update the flash on the buddha or something...not sure how to check this though. Anyway, may come back to this later - for now I am leaving it on SCSI, although it is a shame - I wanted to get USB going under 1.3 using the clock port on the buddha, which is possible using the 1.3 USB drivers floating around the web...because the Amiga 2000 won't boot under 1.3 kickstart with buddha attached (works fine under 3.1) I have to disconnect it for now - another day I guess.

Anyway, just wanted to update how I got on with this problem.

BTW If anyone knows a ADF/ISO virtual mounter for OS1.3 (wishful thinking I know), please point me in the right direction - as expected I can't find one that isn't OS2.0+! I am going crazy writing multi disk ADF's via kryoflux to floppy disks to load old application and utility software I own onto the A2000HD at the moment...
