| As above. I'm absolutely eager to know some info on the next Amiga OS. Do you know somethings? Is the new OS shaping up well?

| I really hope its some self analysis routines for handling radiation induced faults while out in teh asteroid belt, as well as collections of routines for using a bluetooth linked WiiMote for Inertial guidance and hopefully the Open Source part of the Non Microsoft Kinect chipset 3D laser scanner for remote asteroid mineral analysis, tracking and targeting.
The CPU of the Amiga X1000 is Hard enough, thermally, to run a Mars Rover or asteroid miner, but is the rest of the board?

Yes, all that is already done. Just waiting for the final Xorro board to go to production.
As for hardening the rest of the board a spray can of Sozadoan will be supplied. |

There will be speaking and listening OSs. Hopefully also "instant on" will come back (via AOS).

AmigaOS 4.2. Should be the next OS. There's a codename for this? Fancy code name are nice.

In the 3D-world as we know it Xorro is the second dimension, with Zorro being the first.
As we speak Devour Trick is probably working hard on the 3rd dimension board: Yorro!
Can't wait and isn't it unbelievable that AmigaOS is all driving this?

Kickstart was a good idea, made updating easy, but it also slows down the bootup. The idea of speeding up the boot process, somehow, has come up, don't think we'll ever see "instant". We know loading a bunch of files one after another takes time, I just wonder how long it would take 1 big KS file to load & still be easy to update._________________ X1000! Just compile the ks into single file as aros 68k does. |

Or just better as morphos do : load of image file in the memory on boot, unpack, and boot from it (so no hdd slow speed involved => fast booting). _________________ aos4/aros/mos projects & articles

I remember that Frieden talks about a mechanism that allocate numerous block of 2k memory during boot, if i recall well. What the purpose of this?

Instant on is impossible, as peripherals need to be detected and initialized. This is gonna take more time than "instant".
But kickstart modules belong in flashrom, not harddrives. Dunno how much we're talking for the kernel and modules these days, but a NOR-Flash is now typically 16MB while a NAND-Flash is on the order of gigabytes. UBoot takes up 300-400kB. You can run a useful Bootloader, kernel and embedded filesystem for Linux comfortably within a 16MB flash (compressed, but it doesn't take THAT much more to uncompress compared to copying a larger amount of data in the first place).
A good bootloader is a good idea, as it can help you boot even if you manage to corrupt the kernel or filesystem. _________________ Idea for "cheap" card using P2040/41 running multiple OSes and/or SMP OSes.

Does all the hardware detection have to be done immediately. Can't the user system be brought up primarily and hardware detection be completed as a lower priority process. Couldn't a micro-kernel appear to boot up instantly if the focus was on getting the user up and running? |

| Its a pity that Memory speds are so low, given it appears BIOS seems to check it at 100 Million Bytes a second, even on 32, 64 bit busses (100Mhz FSB)?
As for storing machine state and implementing it whiledevices power up and self check, and only Then accessing them, using suposedly included error trapping to handle faults etc, isnt that a variationm of whats widely claimed to be thge next greatest, Hibernation, which is already on Aminet somewhere?
To boot, you store a successful boot memory state on the hard drive, and then read that file into memory on reboot. All the IRQ, address ranges, etc, etc were values in memory during run time, so are just replaced in memory at boot?
In fact, if AOS can boot in only a couple meg, forget Python, and only loading in the drivers the hardware actually uses, why not just save the system state on initialisation, boot, and reboot with that?
I got 2 Meg of EPROM for KickROM replacements. .how much AOS could I get in that?

| Instant On.
What procedure would be needed to change a graphics card if instant on does not know about the new card?
Sounds like an effort to change a computer into an appliance.
And then there is the millimicro-ozonaphite problem. |
