Oh yes, thats true..... But what good will a reset/shutdown script do when hitting ctrl-A-A in frustration ? It has to be intercepted by software then. Perhaps extend it then with 'sleep' or something, just turning of the GFX and drives perhaps. _________________ Theres a time to live and a time to die When its time to meet the maker Theres a time to live but isnt it strange That as soon as you're born you're dying |

Try This:
set code `Requestchoice "OS4Reboot" "WARNING: Reboot system?*N*NThis will cause all unsaved data to be lost!" "Cancel|Soft Reboot|Hard Reboot" type warning` if $code EQ 2 c:reboot fast sync endif if $code EQ 3 c:reboot sync endif unset code

Ever since the days of using up CR2032 batteries every 110 days, I shutdown my A1 via the power switch in the back of the unit.
The only thing that would save me is a window I could keep around that an idle period of, say, the last 5 seconds of all non-volatile storage device activity.
I have been repeatedly fooled by Timberwolf closing its window but not actually ceasing to read(/write?) to my hard disk(s?) for minutes! I had several "validating" on the system disk until I insisted on the reply from STATUS being devoid of Timberwolf-bin.
Since I am staring at an X1000 (lacking networking at the moment) here on my desk, I am NOT excited about changing out my system disk partition for one that is not FFS or doing anything to disturb a working system that I expect to abandon any minute (hour? day? week? several weeks?).

Why on earth are you using FFS ?
Seriously....
Is that the only FS that works on a X1000 ? I didnt think so. _________________ Theres a time to live and a time to die When its time to meet the maker Theres a time to live but isnt it strange That as soon as you're born you're dying |

It can still cause issues if you are unlucky.. Even filesystem with journaling can get corrupted this way. |

It has been that way since WAAAAAAAAY back when. *Most* of the software in SYS: is stable. But Timberwolf ended up in INTERNET.
As you may have read. I ain't changin' nothin' with this X1000 sitting here waiting to fly (back to UK?) _________________ ..effects of civilization upon...nature, the growing gap between what education was supposed to accomplish and what it consisted of, the national debt and...high taxes, the problem of the excess cost of medical care -- Philip Wylie, 1951 |

I dont understand you, sorry....
Are you saying the X1000 has FFS since waaaaaay back or what ?
And that 'internet' you are talking about, is that a partition in your X1000 or the drawer on the SYS partition ? And what has that to do with the filesystem ?

Excessive disk writing (before during and after GUI) seems to be common in ported programs. One of the reasons I don't use AmiCygnix unless I have to is the constant disk access even when appears nothing is going on. I use Snoopy a lot and am appalled at the way some programs work. If you run SFS try looking at the .recycled directory for the partition Timberwolf is on. Here it's always full of backup files that are only seconds or fractions of a second apart! Really, would it hurt to lose one cookie or WEB icon by buffering a reasonable amount of that stuff? RA-OWB and MUI-OWB do an awful lot of small disk writes too. I don't think the native developed browsers like IBrowse or AWeb produce nearly the disk activity that ported browsers do. However, it's especially bad when a program continues disk activity after the GUI shuts down. That can probably be fixed without too many changes._________________ SAM Flex 800MZ with 1GB memory & OS4.1u4 |

The X1000 has a bootfile instead of SLB that HAS to be run from an FFS partition as CFE doesn't support SFS/JXFS (yet?). I think the first contact systems were supplied with the entire system on an FFS partition. A lot of the beta testers have just created a small FFS partition (mine is 1mb) to hold the boot file then use SFS for the OS.
The INTERNET drawer will be the one on sys: as iirc it's the default install location. _________________ OS4 Rocks X1000 beta tester, Sam440 Flex (733)

Ah, I see.....
So in any case the bootfile is vulnarable to nonvalidation because this has to be FFS formatted.
I'd say: keep a working boot disk (or CD) safe outside/not connected to the X1000, and when everything goes to hell, plug it in and try to restore the original bootpartition.
Would that work ?
It is a bit like the SAMs and A1's then. The bootpartition with the kickstart files cant be JXFS formatted.

So the chances of it being invalidated are very slim.

I don't mean to sound negative, but why does this keep happening? The whole point of upgrading to a newer system is to have a better system. My Classics can boot from non-FFS disks for pete's sake.. 20 year old technology.
On a positive note, I think that new Hardware should be released when the software is mature enough. I think users will appreciate that and wont mind the extra wait. Plus it will save so many headaches in the long run, for user and developer.

Has anybody published an article on doing this? Should I bring it up as topic over at the Hyperion X1000 forum?

Not from a non-FFS floppy you can't and to boot from a non-FFS harddrive requires 3rd party files to be installed in the RDB...
My system boots from SFS, The only difference is that boot file (which is 50k so takes a fraction of a second to load) has been moved from the RDB to a FFS partition which makes it easier to update and keep different versions easily available for testing purposes. _________________ OS4 Rocks X1000 beta tester, Sam440 Flex (733)
