Need A Specific Online Storage Site...

(Wasn't sure where to post this but it is regarding an Amiga site so I've posted it here)...

For weeks now I've been trying write a small MP3 Player app (i suppose you could call it an app) for myself and others to use on forums to play MP3 music...

The main problem I and everyone else have found are the sites that let you do so only allow you play music from their own limited selections of music (which honestly most folk have never heard of)...

So I coded a small "app" in HTML which works but the part that's causing the most difficulty is finding an online storage site where you can put your MP3 so that the "app" can play them...

The problem with almost all online storage sites I've tried (signed up to 37 of them) is that they store the links to the MP3s usually with some encrypted name like "XY00056789" and for the "App" to work properly the links to the MP3 must end in ".mp3"...

All the most popular/ main online storage site seem to do this annoying changing of the file name and removing the actual file name from the link, DropBox, Mediafire etc...

The only two sites I've found where you can gain access to the actual stored file ending in ".mp3" are 4Shared and MashUp...

The trouble with 4shared is anyone attempting use the App can't hear anything unless they are a member of 4Shared and signed in to it at the time, which is pretty useless...

The only one that does work is a site called MashUP but it is very slow and all your files get stored in the one place (ie: you can't put them into folders) which make things very messy...

Does anyone know of an online storage site that A) doesn't change the filename and remove the ".mp3" part from it and B) doesn't require others to be a member or logged in to that site to access it...

Like I say MashUp works but it has a very poor way of storing your files (all in the one folder) but it does work as can be see from the link here to my online MP3 Player, anyone know of a better online storage site, thanks...

My Online MP3 Player...

PS: It doesn't usually open up in a full page like this link does but usually in a small separate window, not sure why the link is doing that...

@Franko

Well, the issue is I guess that these sites don't wanna be used as a mass download site of copyrighted material which can be easily found with Google. Are you sure though that your player won't take the altered filename without the .mp3 extension? As in, once you've uploaded the file, can you just link to whatever filename it's converted to?

This is probably due to AW.net specifying a new page on all its external links, something that's fairly standard on a forum. Most browsers will interpret this by opening a new tab which will be the same size as the current page.

@Franko

http://www.mydrive.net

It uses WebDAV, so as long as you put the guest username and password and the full path and filename in the URL you can access files direct from a web browser; eg:
http://guest%40chrisy:guest1@webdav.mydrive.ch/public/test.txt

Just create a guest account from your main account and set the permissions appropriately.

<shameless plug alert> If you're using OS4 you can upload to MyDrive with my WebDAV handler - it's beta but is pretty stable, and that's the service I've mainly been testing it with so I know it works. http://www.openamiga.org/?function=viewfiles&projectid=63

Yup... unfortunately the way the player works is when you point it to a page it does a quick scan of the pages HTML code to find anything ending in .mp3 so that it can mark it as a playable file which then get linked to the player code for playback...

There are other players out there but they are too limited for my purposes and the others who run sites via forumotion whom I am writing this for...

Cheers Chris, I'll give that one a try (it's one of the few I haven't tested yet)...

Just gave the link you posted with "%40chrisy" in it and I get a window opening up saying "Warning Possible Phishing Site"...

Not sure what that means but my browser (Safari) doesn't seem to like it...

@Franko

Its a malformed address, you have two @ signs in the address, the first is denoted by the %40, that can't be right.

Ahh... cheers for that...

That probably explains why Safari doesn't seem to like it and throws up a window with a warning error...

@Chris_Y

I was just about to sign up to the site when I noticed it only has a 2GB limit, the MP3's currently in the list already use up just over 2GB and I need about 5GB of space to do what I need...

I'm still going to give it a try though as other folk might only need 2GB or less for their requirements so I'll test it anyway to see if it works...

Never thought it would be so awkward to do something as simple as this, no wonder everyone else who had been trying to write an MP3 player had been running into problems...

At least I know using "MashUp" works and will just have to live with it being so slow and storing all your files in the one directory but at least it works...

@Chris_Y

I just signed up to the site you recommended but sadly it doesn't work...

It keep the filenames as is (eg: MusicTrack01.mp3) but sadly they way it work you cannot access the actual link URL for them...

I need to be able to access the full link URL to a file for example "http;//OnlineStoragesite/MyMusic/MusicTrck01.mp3" but sadly once uploaded there is no way to find this URL as clicking on the filename just automatically downloads it and the "View source" option on my browser *Safari" get disabled when visiting the site so I cant use that to find & cut and paste the URL...

It also says in the faq section of the site...
Q) Is it possible to link my files from other websites?
A) No, you can only access your files on MyDrive itself.

So that kinda make it like all the others I've tried and not any use for me...

Thanks anyway for the suggestion (it was worth a try)...

There must be other online storage sites out there that keep the filenames as is like MashUp but unlike Mashup lets you create different folders instead of storing everything you upload in one single folder... the search continues...

Well, you can, but you need to simulate accessing over WebDAV. As that is just HTTP with extensions, grabbing files is possible from any browser if you know the address.

The address will be http://username:password@webdav.mydrive.ch/path/file.mp3
Where username and password ideally need to be a guest one, rather than your main account.
path/file.mp3 is exactly the path and filename you specified when you uploaded.

You can't list the files like this, but I don't think that is a problem given what you are trying to do?

And, yes, it's 2GB for free, you can pay for more space though. Apologies for the confusion caused by the username mangling, it should indeed have been @ not %40.

@Chris_Y

Sorry for being such a dummy about this but I haven't got a clue what "WebDav" is...

Clicking on the link you just gave all I get is this...

From what i gather from your explantion I need to do the following...

Create a "guest" account and password and insert them like you suggested !!!

But the problem I have here is I cant find the actual URL that points to the file (ie: the URL like the one you have shown "mydrive.ch/path/file.mp3" because there is nothing on the MyDrive site that lets you see the actual URL...

The only thing I get when uploading a file is this...

There doesn't seem to be anywhere that points to the actual URL of the stored file and clicking on the files title just downloads it to the computer. (I can't even find the URL by viewing the pages source via safari)...

Who'd have thunk such a simple task could be so awkward...

Thanks for all your help by the way but It looks like I'll just have to use "MashUP" and put up with all the files being stored in one folder...

@Franko

That address will be:
_http://user:pass@webdav.mydrive.ch/Sound Like The 60s Vol I/01_How_Do_You_Do_It.mp3
(substituting your username and password, or ideally a guest one (see Settings)

Although in actual fact you'll need to URL encode the spaces, so instead it will be:
Sound%20Like%20The%2060s%20Vol%20I/01_How_Do_You_Do_It.mp3

It's probably best to avoid spaces for this reason!

Once you know how they are constructed it is easy to copy'n'paste. If you use http://www.cyberduck.ch copying the path and filename out of Finder (as well as uploading files) will be easy.

It won't show the full paths in the interface because they don't intend you to access like this - it only works due to the quirk that WebDAV is built on top of HTTP.

@Chris_Y

Thanks for all that info, most helpful...

So all I should need to do to use the MyDrive site would be to (upload of course the MP3's) and change the html pages I create for each album from what I currently use, this for example...

[a href="http://media.mashup.com/1336165840_vcccvd0jjm38kvoywzj_0wrisxp0yfxp1sobwq671lwzyzsudto9.mp3" title="Jerry & The Pacemakers - How Do You Do It">Jerry & The Pacemakers - How Do You Do It

[a href="http://media.mashup.com/1336165865_ajgqouicu362ldha51o_kus167il4lkuqev31a7a6g44o6dmvch2edsib.mp3" title="The Swinging Blue Jeans - Hippy Hippy Shake">The Swinging Blue Jeans - Hippy Hippy Shake

[a href="http://media.mashup.com/1336165903_tkmbo7k6gqgc8wz8b_8vszwlsknya3z50r8xsb7hk48u406iemdm.mp3" title="Lulu & The Luvers - Shout">Lulu & The Luvers - Shout

to this...

[a href="http;//username:password@webdav.mydrive.ch/Sounds%20Like%20The%2060s%20Vol%20I/How%20Do%20%You%20Do%20It%20.mp3" title= "Jerry & The Pacemakers - How Do You Do It">Jerry & The PaceMakers - How Do You Do It

etc... etc...

(had to change the < at the beginning of those examples to "[" otherwise the site here was interpreting them as html code)

I'll give it a go, plus the extra storage on MyDrive is a lot cheaper than all the other sites so that takes care of that problem too, just need to write some sort of script or automation procedure to take care of handling the file names now (replace the spaces with %20) and hopefully I'll have a much neater solution for storing the tracks...

Thank you for all the help, much appreciated I assure you...
