What will be in Update 5?

I picked this up from here, where ssolie says Update 5 is in the works.

I would like to ask if perhaps the new shell + console-handler is deemed ready at this point in time, apparently tonyw said it wasn't ready back when I started this thread on the official Hyperion Entertainment forums. The relevant post would be this one.

After all, another 8 months should be enough, given there were only "some issues needed to be addressed first", right?

@zerohero

Officially, update 5 brings only X1000 support. If there were some add`s as new features, only X1000 users can tell us which, since so far Hyperion has been quite.

u5 is supposed to be last 4.1 version (4.1.5) and several times it has been mentioned that all new features will go to 4.2, so best we can hope are some bugfixes for non x1000 users.

But lets see what is in the Boing Bag!

@zerohero

i have no idea, but i'll wager you a case of beer that we won't see it until OS4.2 since it is a 'new' feature that wasn't promised as part of OS4.1. could be wrong, and i'd love to be surprised, but i doubt it.

besides, i played with this new console back at amiwest 2010 and 2011, and it looked pretty solid back then. screenshots from OS4 beta testers occasionally show it as well, so it's been around for quite a lot longer than eight months.

Yep, this is what I remember as well - the new shell/console was mentioned as one feature for the 4.2 release. Sadly I can't remember where I read that...maybe it was Steven, Tony or one of the beta testers...

Not sure how accurate it is, but I'm counting roughly 4 or 5 years now. At least in development, or said to be in development anyway.

Anyway, there must be other things people want in Update 5 as well?

i'd settle for the ability to use USB2 (the ehci driver) on my system without it causing random hangs.

@zerohero

...maybe new, updated MUI? I think we need it to have a new version of Odyssey web browser (MUI OWB).

Perhaps we can have Update 4 for SAM first?

All,

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but when I hear Amiga and Apple mention a "New" OS, that should mean - OS 5, OS 6, OS 11 and OS 12 (For Apple). When they say things like 4.2, 10.5.7, etc, those are just UPGRADES.

@edponpon

It is just you, besides it is not a new OS.

first digit = major changes
seconded digit = minor changes.
third digit = tiny changes.

Microsoft use 4th digit for auto incremented build number.

All the tiny changes or are free, all minor or major changes you need to pay for.

Of cause Hyperion does not operate whit third digit they call this updates, they used to be called boing bags when Hagge and Partner where developing the OS.

Microsoft offers free “service packs” which is like Hyperion AmigaOS “updates”.
Apple also provides some free upgrades, don't know what they are called.

@zerohero

100% we never see the new console handler in Update 5, this specific feature was planned for AmigaOS 4.2 as far as i remember and i'm quite sure it still for, more probably we will have bugfixes here and there and maybe some new update on drivers, libraries, kernel and so on.

I for example noted recently a public GfxBench commit on Hans website (submitted from an Update 5 machine) that contained some interesting new files

http://hdrlab.org.nz/benchmark/gfxbench2d/OS/AmigaOS/Result/679

If you look at the version file you can note:

Kernel 53.27 --> we have at the moment 53.25 in Update 4
Picasso96API.library 53.3 --> new
rtg.library 53.20 --> new

Even if not the big one update (it will be a big with 4.2) i'm expecting also a small fix for MUI, the current one contain a bug that crash badly MUI OWB when you open the bookmark panel, however we will see what they release at the end, to be honest i'm happy with my current Update 4 machine

That is a real software numbering. When you go to e.g.
Word 2003 you will see its actualy Word 11 and if updated with so called Office 2003 SP3 its 11.8328 ...

With increased competition Firefox has started negating this practice by raising number with minor updates to catch up with Internet Explorer and Chrome etc. so these commercial days people do a lot of tricks to sell products better
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_versioning

If we did the same OS 4.1 could be OS 5, and OS 4.2 OS6 but that wouldn`t be true since they are all fourth generation. With decent companies you get a lot of upgrades just with second digit change (like 4.0 to 4.1 transition was big)

@zerohero

If any form of OpenGL/Mesa is available/useable, this may be a nice testbed, while we wait for the version 4.2

I mean, maybe we can find bug and malfunction prior the release of the 4.2, and have a bug/proof version of OpenGL for the next major release of the OS.

:P

Hold on... I'm getting confused. Update 5 was already released for the X1000 but no other platforms? Right? So what is this thread actually about? Or are we getting an Update 5 for Not-X1000 which is different from the one the X1000 already has?

As I said, confused.

Obviously you didn't read my opening post, nor the link to where I picked this up... Bah, I thought it would have been way more funny if you had used Update 3 all this time

Yes, Update 5 is coming to the other supported plattforms, not just the X1000, and yes, it would seem to include newer components. At least a few.

Yes, right

Yes i think, we are talking about update 5 for all platform now, x1000 users use it already since months however i presume it was a "first version" of this update 5 so now their version can be a bit different than before, i suspect they received some daily interim updates since then, so the "real" update 5 might be the one we are waiting now ..

Hopefully Hyperion/devs guys can explain the story a bit more

Indeed it is !
