The ultimateppc board looks nice. Would be interested in it if they can keep the cost down. If they somehow expose the PCI-E 4x and PCI-E 2x ports that would be cool.
That would be a nice upgrade for my (unused) A3000D(UX)

| re: ultimatePPC board I hope we see also affordable FPGA based 68k accelerators in the future... perhaps with RadeonM9 option for GFX. Another option might be P1013 based accelerator without the 68k chip. I imagine it would be 50% cheaper than dual cpu designs. 68k could be done via emulator, like it was planned to be done for AmiJoeG3 card. P1013 accelerator with ePCIe x4 + miniPCIex1 would explode expandability.

The problem there is we would need to not only get the SoC design part but also the FPGA/PLD interface between the SoC eLB and the Amiga bus, with bus mastering etc.
It's actually pretty close to the problem you have when interfacing a 68040/060, as they have slightly different bus signals than the 68020/030 which are mostly the same.
You would need to negotiate with the onboard CPU to have the bus, and then never release it. Then map the Amiga memory to the lowest 16MB of the PPC memory map, and from there it's just a matter of executing code. I would init all the onboard things within UBoot so that you have the onboard mouse and keyboard available. Even AGA would be available in case there's a problem with other output devices. I have the ADS512101 here, and it runs UBoot off of a very large NOR flash, and also has the eLB going to a large connector for debug. Couple that to an eval board for a spartan or similar, in turn connected to the amiga motherboard, and you have yourself an eval system. The P1013 has a subset of the functionality of the MPC5121e local bus (it's missing the 32 bit mode afaik). This should not be a problem, as the MPC5121e can most likely be set up to emulate the P1013 bus 100% exact. I'm using it for a 16 bit NOR flash, the eval board uses 32bit. _________________ Idea for "cheap" card using P2040/41 running multiple OSes and/or SMP OSes.

Oh and I would think SATA (for internal HD) +eSATA (for external HD or DVD) would be rather interesting given that the P1013 has this onchip. But seeing as this is AmigaWorld, home of unrealistic expectations, I guess at a minimum it would need to have a trillion ports and interfaces, so just start including a PCIe switch from the beginning _________________ Idea for "cheap" card using P2040/41 running multiple OSes and/or SMP OSes.

About the UltimatePPC; from their website:

I do not think so. I was in contact with Mr. Haage some time ago and they have left the amiga-market a long time ago and I did not have the impression that they are planning to start supporting again (at least when I had last contact a couple of months ago) and I do not believe they changed their mind since then. So I can only assume that they name Haage because of OS3.5/OS3.9. and have not contacted anyone regarding OS-support. Last edited by OlafS25 on 23-May-2012 at 10:02 AM.

OK, I somehow managed to miss that people want it for classic Amiga. But you're right in your points, it's not going to be as easy as "write a Mediator driver"._________________ OpenWindows Initiative. Port PS3 hardware to bananas. For free. Join today and receive expired $50 cupon from AI! |

Well, I have a working A4000 PPC and have to disappoint you - I'm no "hard core nostalgic gamer" and never was. I like to get serious work done - preferably with my Amiga flagship (the next flagship will be an A1 X1k).
There are no games installed on my Amiga workstation._________________ Ciao

See post 14 in this thread.
PowerPC board without OS4 (or MorphOS) support is useful only as expensive 68k card with some peripheals - waste of time and money. I really hope they will get proper OS support. |

once (and if) the UltimatePPC will be ready bundled with the HW developer documentation, it would be fool for Hyperion not support it.

(it might result some silly AOS4 demo platform for some event...)

AmiJoeG3 kind of HW around P1013 would be slightly more sane than big box accelerator, IMHO. http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/amijoe Last edited by KimmoK on 23-May-2012 at 02:15 PM.

| There`ll be no WOS, there`ll be no OS4, MorphOS and probably no P96/CGX, if it happens it`ll be an 040 board...

Well you can always run Linux PPC on it or port AROS PPC too it, if Hyperion or MorphOS team is not interested, the PowerPC chips if has it own address space, can accelerate many things, like video decoding, emulation, only the imagination is limitation, one nice experiment might be to see if you use emulate 680x0 faster then real 680x0 chip and that should be doable.

Making that appear like a native 68 accelerator to the classic side would take some hardcore firmware coding, no-one is going to do it no chance. _________________ Fraggle

| I wonder if this ultimate board would be able to run two OS at the same time. (native AOS3 and native AOS4 or AOS3+ SomeOpensourceOSPPC)
About getting AOS4 for that ultimate: one hard way could be via CSPPC emulation.
And if AOS4 is one day ported to P1xxx freescale chip based motherboard, it should easily run also on that ultimate card. Last edited by KimmoK on 24-May-2012 at 12:52 PM. Last edited by KimmoK on 24-May-2012 at 12:51 PM. Last edited by KimmoK on 24-May-2012 at 12:50 PM.
