Hi,

listening to "high frequent" power-down-sound of the HDDs on my SAM when powering SAM down, I wondered, if it made sense to power down a drive by software first before cutting the power line.
Would this be "smoother" for the drive and could increase the drive's life?

Harddrives are much better today then they were in the 80s Amigas. And they weren't bad then. I'd say don't worry about it. When the power is turned off the drives don't stop on a dime. They spin themselves down. If your goal is longest drive life, in theory, you'd never shut them down. It's typically not the motor that fails it's the reading mechanisms and they are hit hardest at startup and at shutdown. I doubt shutting down in software rather then shutting down at power makes any statistically detectable improvements.
