| hey,
Its Summer again so now my XE is getting too hot again and the hardware might get fried, what is the normal temperature and what is the maximum it can tolerate?
I ask as i need to make sure my sensors (i have a temperature gauge on the front panel and wire sensors on the cooling rib and on the cpu itself) are still intact.
thanks. _________________ Brand new website... www.amigaguru.com |

I know it's not calibrated, so the absolute value is probably meaningless, but when I got mine (2nd hand) the CPUTemp reported around 60-70 degrees C with a pretty rubbish cooler. Might've been the stock one, I'm not sure because I've never seen a new A1...
Anyway, I fitted one of the nice Zalman coolers and now CPUTemp rarely reads above 30 degrees, with ambient around 25. Even without calibration, that's a fairly substantial jump and can only be a good thing.
What cooler do you have on your CPU? _________________ http://www.robthenerd.com |

DONOTWAIT TOP=26 LEFT=2000 (STARTICONIFIED) (SETENV) (TEMPOFFSET=10) (TEMPFACTOR=1.5) (FAHRENHEIT) (NOGUI) (WARNTEMP=65) CLOCK (IGNORETASKS=CPUInfo.CPUTask|CPUClock.CPUTask|dnetc crunch #1) SHOWDATE UPDATESPEED=2
this is what i have in the tooltypes and it reports 80"c but my hardware sensors report 45"c atm and at 46"c the alarm goes off.
i will try and find all details about what cooler i got and i will reseat the sensors too.
the system is stable, rarely see lockups and such.

Yeah, I never set the factor or offset on my one either, so it's probably in or around the same temperature mine was with the old cooler. My old one was a small, square set of aluminium fins with a 40 or 50mm fan on top, and flimsy plastic clips to hold it onto the module board. These clips didn't exert enough pressure to keep reliable contact with the CPU, allowing it to get pretty hot.
There's a good guide around the place somewhere on fitting a Zalman VF-CU900 to an A1-XE G4 CPU module. It's a little fiddly, but easy and secure, and like I said it will keep the CPU a little above ambient temperature if you run it at full speed and is never more than slightly warm to the touch. _________________ http://www.robthenerd.com |

Mina has survived many summers with 30 degrees indoor tempreratures and still alive after 8 years I have a Pentium4 cooler on it. _________________ >Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. >A1-XE/G4, Radeon9250, Sweex 5.1, SII680 -Don't hesitate to contact me about my programs, but please use e-mail instead of PM. Does this imply you don't run the CPUTemp docky?
Toaks has got me worried now. My summer temp reading via CPUTemp_52.15 is 55 C. I thought I the fan that I got was a good one, but ... 55 is loads higher than 30 even without their being any calibration for comparison. _________________ ..effects of civilization upon...nature, the growing gap between what education was supposed to accomplish and what it consisted of, the national debt and...high taxes, the problem of the excess cost of medical care -- Philip Wylie, 1951 |

| The One went around mostly 50-60 but usually more below even at 933Mhz and a high uncommon temperature outside (over 36, meter said over 56 beep and no more...) BUT our floors are freezing cold even at summer.
So That's why we get a lot of visitors then when it's hot?. Ok. My insulation is done;)
CPUTemp info only, also could remember wrong. 20- booting-47..

I have my XE G4 in an air conditioned room so that must help.
I am still using the original CPU fan, but the following may be a little unorthodox, I have a 6 inch fan blowing into the case from the left side for ages.

Many G4s don't have TAU (Thermal Assist Unit) and so cannot provide an accurate temprature. So do not pay attention to what says CPU Temp Docky.

Indeed, however, as a rough guide it's still useful, for example mine shows slightly above room temperature on boot, and reaches a peak after idling for around 15-20 mins. Given that that peak is around half what it was with my old cooler can only be a good thing, regardless of the actual readings.
@Toaks
This is the cooler here. There was a guide to fitting them to the A1 modules but I can't seem to be able to find it now. It's pretty straightforward anyway, jsut the screws have to be cut or replaced as the supplied ones won't fit between the XE module and the motherboard. _________________ http://www.robthenerd.com |

yes, and that is why i have a hardware sensor (which you attach onto the heatsink).
@daedalus
thanks for the heads up!. Last edited by Toaks on 28-May-2012 at 07:19 PM.

instead of changing the cpu fan, you might add a front and rear fan in your tower |

True but , you calibrate CPU Temp Docky to a temp guage with sensor at the CPU base. TEMPOFFSET is set to the difference of the two. WARNTEMP=44 degrees Celsius is a good CPU cut-out setting.
