Amiga OS4.1 Classic installation (SOLVED!)

I got my brand new copy of Amiga OS4.1 classic two weeks ago. It simply refuses to install onto my A4000T with Cyberstorm PPC which has 128mb on board. I have put my memory setting to 70ns and turned off maprom option as guide says.

I also had Mediator with Voodoo 3-graphics card, PCI ethernet-board, Audigi soundboard, and USB PCI-expansion on my machine.

As my machine refused to install OS4.1 classic, I removed cards one by one from my machine and tried to reinstall each time I removed a expansion card. Finally I only had Cyberstorm on my machine (and FastATA4000 IDE-controller). Results were alweays the same. A4000T boots up the installation floppy, resets the machine loads something from OS4.1 classic CD and then freezes and does nothing. Just a black screen. I left my A4000T on for few hours to verify this.

When I had all my stuff (Mediator and so on) installed on my machine, Amiga OS4.1 classic bootscreen(?) (with Amiga OS4.1 classic logo) appeared few times but then machine freezed everytime too. It got stuck on logo.

Machine works just fine under OS3.9 running PPC applications too so I highly doubt that my machine is broken. OS4.0 does just the same as OS4.1 classic. It wont install.

What could be wrong? Thanks for your help!

Maybe you find what your looking for her:

Don't know but maybe your PowerPC is getting too hot, try cooling it and see if AmigaOS4 boots.
Before the PowerPC was not doing a lot under OS3.x, besides sitting there waiting for some thing to do.

Way off topic - but with respect to cooling my Ua1-c gets too hot to run in the summer time and I have to relocate it to the nice cool basement of our home for it to be cool enough to work for the many hours each day my son loves to use it to play Open Sonic and SuperFrog. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I have a 32" Acer high definition monitor/TV in the basement to hook the AmigaOne to either! Makes for some fun gaming - reminds me of the days when friends used to play Marble Madness on an Amiga 1000 hooked to a wide screen TV in the mid 1980s.

I had similar problems a few years ago when trying to install OS4 classic on my own 4000T.

The installation would get so far and would always freeze at the same point, this would happen with different CD drives connected using the onboard IDE, FastATA4000, and with CSPPC SCSI drives.

I though then it must have been a media related problem so asked for a replacement CD but the same issue persisted. The solution I found in the end was to transfer the CSPPC over to my A4000D where installation went fine, and then transfer all back over to the A4000T.

I will be upgrading to OS4.1 shortly and am expecting the same weird issue. It might be that your problems are totally different to mine, but If you have access to a A4000D it would definitely be worth giving that a try.

1) OS 4.1 refused to install with the FASTATA4000 in any Zorro slot on my A4000T, it is not on the hardware compatible list; OS 4.1 only supports the RTL8029 Ethernet board; OS 4.1 supports only an ESS-1 Solo sound board (there is external support for a SoundBlaster 128); heat is only an issue after hours of use, not on a "cold" boot. You will determine that need later; if so get a VGA chip cooler (the smallest you can find). You can get an all copper one for not much.

2) You will have to make do with the CyberStorm PPC SCSI device or the A4000T's IDE ports. Trust me, there is no work around! I tried them all. That "allowbaseaccess" would only work AFTER you load the Kernel rom, which won't load with the ATA4000 in place. It took me 3 weeks to get that one right.

3) If you have not been using the CSPPC SCSI, it is very fast, but you need certain things for a good working environment. A) A Multidevice 68-pin SCSI cord. It will need termination on both ends (and by this I mean "Active, Wide, LVD/SE Termination"). Many of these come with one (1), you will need to buy a second. It goes TERM--CSPPC--DEVICE--DEVICE--...--TERM. THese are found on the "bay" sites and retail. B) You cannot use U320 harddrives unless it is the only device. C) You can mix SCSI-50 devices with a 50-pin to 68-pin adapter, and you can add IDE devices with an ACARD SCSI->IDE adapter. DO NOT FORGET THE TERMINATION up above, "on device" termination may work temporarily, but will fail.

4) If you decide to go the internal IDE device route, do not set up a SWAP partition until you have installed Update 4, as it will not be supported.

5) You will find additional help on Hyperion's site; if you don't, then start a thread and ask. But be prepared to completely detail your hardware.

Guys... I forget something... I recently upgraded my FastATA4000 board too with new a chip... OS4.0 installation worked with older FastATA4000 chip on the other A4000T. I wonder could this be the solution...

Anyways, many, many thanks for your tips guys. I get back to you. :)

I finally found the solution! The installation problem WAS due to the newer BootROM v 5.0b on Fast ATA 4000 controller!

I removed it and put back the older BootROM 2.1, reseted the machine and BANG! The installation screen finally appeared!

Feel free to spead the information. There is probably some other users too who have the same problem. Hmmm... I wonder what I do with BootROM v5.0b upgrade now... If I wish to use OS4.1 I think that this upgrade is useless, atleast for now. Crap...

Hey, thanks for clearing that up; I bought my FastATA 4000 card last year and it has the version 5 ROM. I wonder if I can get hold of an older ROM; I have retired the card since it would not work under OS 4.1.

@Karpow

Contact Elbox, they fixed it so the FAST-ATA A1200 MKIV would work under OS4.1 and even provided hyperion with a working driver for inclusion on the CD that could be loaded as a kickstart module.
There has been a bug open for the A4000 Fast ATA problem for a while so it was known about, just not what was triggering it.
