Seems to be some kind of `lifestyle portal` that consolidates several programmes and websites into one, busy, webpage.

The fact that Page thinks it`s obsoleted by the truly awful (let-me-set-that-up-for-you-my-way) Android ecosystem says it all really.

Since yesterday (since the announcement) I've been looking at alternatives. There are a couple of free ones. Currently I'm looking at symbaloo as a replacement. I don't like it yet.

I've also heard Netvibes should be able to fill the gap, haven't tried that one yet.

Cheers, I'll look into those...

@ Daedalus

Think you hit the nail on the head there, that's the point I reckon about using iGoogle, you can easily set it up to do the most common and useful things you do on the web, no clutter, no fuss, no unwanted apps/ gadgets and whichever computer you happen to be on you know your always gong to have the same easy to use and access "homepage"...

With a bit of luck they'll change their mind at Google and keep it, probably unlikely though as like most of these big internet companies these days, they love to change things all the time to "new improved" versions that generally turn out to be totally naff and it's obvious those responsible don't even use the things themselves otherwise they would see for themselves how crap their latest ideas are...

@Franko

They probably didn't make any money with it so it's useless for them.

@Franko

I've just set up a page in Netvibes and it nearly looks as if I'm using my iGoogle page. So I guess I will retire iGoogle a bit sooner

Now... all I'm missing is an Amigaworld.net gadget....

@Amiga_3k

I've just had a look at "Netvibes" can't say from their website that I'm impressed to be honest...

There's a button there that say "Play Video" which I assume is supposed to show you a demo of it in action, only thing is nothing happens when you click the button... not a good start...

Anywhoo, I gave it a try with the "basic" free version and it's kinda like iGoogle but not as well laid out, especially when googling for something (for me the most important part), the results layout is very poor and limited compared to google (can't find any way to customise that bit)...

But the thing that has really put me off even trying it out properly is all of the features google give you for free are being charged by "NetVibes" a crazy sum of $499 / Month...

That's gotta be a typo/ mistake surely, they must mean $4.99 / month and even at that it's not something that's even worth paying 5 bucks a month for let alone 500...

@Franko

Hmm... then you must do rather exotic stuff with iGoogle . I've setup the Netvibes page with some 8 tabs giving me all kinds of info on news, social media, mail (I couldn't get iGoogle to display the 4 different gmail accounts I have, Netvibes makes it possible). I've got a useless page which tells me that it's raining here (I can confirm it by looking out of the window) but that the weather in Hungary is not that bad, which is good as we will be heading for Hungary next week for a 2 weeks holiday. There's a page where I've put two Amiga sites on (Amigaworld and Amigans) and then some extras like google translate, GWK money conversion site and a calendar. All stuff I had on iGoogle for free which is for free on Netvibes as well.

About the Google search results, for me it's good enough.

But then... there must be other alternatives as well, probably one that's suiting your needs as well.

My theory is that Google wants to make Chrome the go to ecosystem for extensions and a customizable blank tab. In other words they want to make it the place people can use Google apps on systems that are not Android and the probably soon to be ill-faded Chrome OS. The key issue is they have not taken into account people who use OSs that are not MacOS or Windows based (don't really know if they keep the Linux version up to date) as what this forum is all about, are out of luck.

But like any source of natural competition someone will have to step in and do very well where Google has seemed to fail or is relunctant to capitalize on. Who here still uses Gamespy or MSN Games if at all?
