guys,

i've been rather interested in purchasing pagestream 5.0 for my SAM, but have been hesitant given the (lack of active) progress of development over the past two years. so before i pony up $99USD for this thing, does it even work well on OS4.1 update 4? is deron even developing this program any more, or has it gone the way of ibrowse?

@eliyahu

I recently bought PageStream 5 for my X1000, but haven't been able to make it work yet.

But it seems that others have a nicely working PageStream.

@Johan

I've emailed him a week ago about v5.0 Pro for the Amiga. He said that it's still under development.

@eliyahu

I am running Pagestream 4.1.3.4 on my SAM460 with Amiga OS4.1.4 and all works well, don't know if Pagestream 5.0 will work though, but assume it would!

If I do remember Well, the dev got a big problem with his house (an amazing story were someone managed to gain use of his house and asked him to go out, maybe the dev's brother if my memory is good).
So the dev stated at one point that he had to move somewhere else and that he had money issues (think about the situation, you just sell a software and make little money, but you pay nothing to use your home, and the next day, you have to move and pay each month to keep that house, this is not the same story, and you may have to take a part time job to pay the monthly fee of the house).

I hope my memory is just good on this affair, maybe i'm just mixing different sories with that one, and I do not have enough will to search on forums if I find the original statement from the dev).

Anyway I had a version on OS4 with microaone and a windows version, it's a nice tool (although i could just do all thoser things in microsoft publisher, but well, this was just to show that I can do the same thing without microsoft tools).
From time to time i had to sent a mail to the dev who always responded fast, he's a nice guy for sure.

Pagestream 5.0 alpha (OS4 native) version works reasonably well, but you have to manually refresh. The newer v5 68k betas don't work quite so well (although that may have changed - my Pagestream account seems to have had the 68k group removed from it so I haven't downloaded any recently. I rarely use Pagestream anyway so I'm happy to stick with the old alpha until there is a newer OS4 native version)

I'm sure Deron will get there eventually.

edit accidentally put v4 instead of v5 in this message - now corrected.

@eliyahu

I would stick to 4.x version (68k) - it works reasonably well, it seems more stable than the PPC-native version with my setups.

*If* you purchase version 5.x you'll get 4.x for free (at least the last time I checked). The only native version that could be considered usable in the 5.x branch is 5.0.3.3 which is still heavy beta (save often!). The 5.x 68k variants are useless with both OS4.x and OS3.x - at least *I* never got them to do anything useful except freezing or crashing with AmigaOS 3.9 or 4.1.

@DC_Edge

It was their land that Deron and Marna were screwed out of by his brother. Thanfully they were able to get a deal on new land but had to move from Wisconsin to South Dakota.

The full story is here.

I'm still using the 68k PGS v4.1.5.6. Think the last v5 had to be started from a shell, never tried it. The PGS rep at AmiWest is Chuck.

@eliyahu

The 4.whatever (4.0.6.1?) that I used to use on my A1 quit working, but I was able to tease what I absolutely needed from 5.0.5.8 Pro. It had to be started from a command line, and would always start extremely slowly. When I got a GR SDI and click "Ignore SDI errors," I'd know it would be up pretty soon.

With the last OS4 upgrade 5.0.5.8 Pro started working better. And since I moved everything over to my SAM460, I click on its icon and after a while, up it comes, no Grim Reapers or recoverable alerts. (I just timed it at 60 seconds; I don't think it usually takes it that long to launch. Maybe Timberwolf is gobbling up a lot of CPU right now?)

[Later] Sure enough, I got out of Timberwolf, rebooted. and launched PageStream. On screen in less than 30 seconds! Wow! And my guess below about scripts wa correct; they do not work.

It has shortcomings. I don't think the scripts work, and the only polygons it will draw (when you click on the triangle in the toolbox) are various shapes of pentagons. But I have been able to do what I need to. Saving to PDF, printing Postscript, importing jpegs, etc., all work fine.

Too bad "mileage varies" so much! I'm not sure 5.0.5.8 is working for anyone else.

@kilaueabart

I'm using 5.0.5.8 Pro here too on my A1-XE with OS4.1.4.

I playd tonight with gradient fills, borders, fonts and drawing shapes. While it is sluggish to respond, I wasn't able to crash it in over a half hour of play.

5 sided polygons: that must be the default. I went into the settings and changed it to 8 sides, and drew a nice stop sign.

Thanks for the good hint! I tend to forget one can do things with menu items (there are so many of them).

@kilaueabart

I don't even get as far as menu-items. Neither PG_4 nor PG_5 gets any further than the login-window. Then my system locks and needs a cold reset.
