To cut a long story short I have got someone to come back to the Amiga today

A guy who I was trying to buy a webcam off via his company SpicedApple, he said he couldnt get that particular model any more and wondered why I wanted that actual one. I explained I wanted it to use on the Amiga and he came back to me saying her was an Amiga user 10 years ago and left the scene, after some discussion via e-mail he says he is very interested in returning so I told him about ACubes entry level SAM440 for 270 Euros and he is investigating further and may get one.

Cheers me up no end to find these people who used to use the Amiga unaware that it's still evolving and takes little to get them interested again

I know it's only one person but if many of us managed to do that it would be a start......... who knows!

i'd say... stay away from the 440.

i got quite a few guys active again late last year, there's a small thread here
http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=34891&forum=2

now if only we got that netbook , that was a perfect price range and easier to sell than just a motherboard etc.

One possible way to let many old Amigans know about the new Amiga systems is to parse Aminet file comments for email addresses and send out an email to them pointing to the new Hyperion Os4.1 web pages, the AEON web site, etc, while writing a warm and cheery "Remember When Computing Was Fun?" message to them. Sure, only a few email addresses may still be valid...but a few is better than none!
Most Amigans have very fond memories of the Amiga and most do not know that the Amiga continues to live.... just letting them know and pointing to some Youtube videos of an X1000 in action might stimulate some interest.

Well, as an ex-Amiga 1200 user, I've been visiting this site on and off for almost a decade. I was about to write it off but the news of new products has kept me coming back more frequently. I've was laid off a few months ago and have been getting by with some contract work, and when my situation gets better/stable, I may buy one just to try it. Also, while working in Philly, I was at a get together with some of my new co-workers and I kicked up some some talk about how I was into computers a long time ago starting with a C64 and ending with an Amiga before switching to the (evil) PC. A co-worker at the gathering overheard me and said he too owned an Amiga! Wow, it's a small world out there. We talked about our Amiga experiences and in all, it was a good get together. It's just what I thought about those ex-Amigians... they're out there. All we need to do is find a way to bring them back.

Good idea Scott, even if it doesn't find us many old Amiga users/developers, it is as you wrote "a few is better than none".

I really like threads like this one that get some of us brainstorming to try to find ideas on how to make things better, or how to find new Amiga users, or bring former Amiga users back to the community. Even if threads like this one only bring us a handful of new, or returning Amiga users, it is far better than a thread where we are all fighting each other and we end up losing a few users who get fed up with the nonsense and decide to leave for good.

I hope more people will chime in with more ideas on how to find new or returning Amiga users. It is a difficult task to tear people away from their "State of the Art" computers, consoles and tablets, and convince them that they should be using any form of the Amiga, or any system inspired by the Amiga and now labeled a Next Gen Amiga system.

We have a new tool to help bring former users back. It is a new YouTube video done by Mike Brantley on how he has the Amiga 68k version of LightWave3D v5.2, running on his AmigaOne X1000 computer. Here is a link to the YouTube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRoeHaAS-MI&feature=youtu.be

It is one of the best computer video demonstrations I have ever seen for any Next Gen Amiga and because it uses a very well known program that was famous on Amiga computers in the past, almost all former Amiga users will relate to that video and appreciate a new Next Gen Amiga that can run a well known and favorite Amiga program from their past at many times the speed that the fastest 68060 powered Classic Amiga could manage.

I suggest showing that video and making more like it for other well known and widely used Amiga 68k programs, such as ImageFX, AdPro, Vista Pro, Aladdin4D, and many other programs that show our new Next Gen Amigas running software that these former Amiga users can relate to, but running at a much increased speed.

Also, videos using RunInUAE on our Next Gen Amigas to run some of the favorite games of the height of the Amiga's popularity, would show these former Amiga users how easy it is to enjoy all the games and productivity software that they fell in love with so many years ago, but they can do it today on new, or slightly used computers with much greater capabilities, and the ability to run other OSes, so they can enjoy even greater flexibility and possibly find that they can do almost all of their home computing on one of these Next Gen Amiga systems, instead of being tortured with the endless rapid update and upgrade wheel of typical PC's.

If the right methods are used, I think that a lot of former Amiga users and other retro computer users, can be enticed into looking at and possibly returning to the Amiga community. We can probably even convert some former users of other retro computers who never used an Amiga before, but remember them with curiosity from the days that they were using other 8bit, or 16bit early computers which are now completely dead and gone.

my first question reading the thread is do you want to win new users for "Amiga" or just a few new buyers for OS4. I do not make any judgements about OS4 or MorphOS (because I do not own them and have no attention to) but it would be better to sell them all available platforms. Of course when you tell others not only from your choice (OS4) you have the risk that they choose another option but it makes the platform more interesting. What I would like to hear where are the special advantages of each NG OS (Aros, MorphOS, AOS). When i asked I never got a serious answer. Why decide for OS4 and not for Aros, MorphOS? It would be nice if people who own and use all variants would make a (more or less) neutral review/description so that a potential buyer/user could get informations and make better decisions.

I want to get to as many ex Amiga users as possible and show them what is available today!

Thats just because it's the platform of my choice, if they have a look and decide to go into another direction that's up to them, it's a free world. I know nothing about MorphOS or Aros and I don't want to know because I'm very happy with what I have and know, doesn't mean to say others choosing different is wrong, it's their choice.

I could not "consult" either because I have only limited knowledge about differences myself. Most have their "choice" and do not know much about the other platforms. It would be good if there would be neutral information sources made by people owning and using all of them.

I've met quite a few ex-amigans lately, mostly people who worked in the movie production field, and the one thing they all have in common is that they switched to PC when CBM went bust and had no idea that the Amiga still lived and thrived (relatively speaking) until I told them.

Even though I only use OS4, I wouldn't be helping the cause if I only told them about OS4, because the hardware is too expensive for someone who's merely curious. So I tell them about WinUAE and AROS for the PC, MOS on G4 macs, MOS/OS4 on NG hardware, AmigaWorld.net/Amiga.org and AmiWest.

That way they can just read about it to find out more or get involved if they feel like it. Unfortunately I can't come up with some extremely enticing reasons why they should get back to the Amiga, at best I mention that its spirit has been kept intact, all that made it so great and pleasant to use, and that even through emulation it's much faster and capable now than what they remember, and that it doesn't suffer from all the malware plagging Windows.

There has to be more solid arguments why ex-amigans should take another look at the platform

Anyway, my main point was that millions of people don't even know that the Amiga didn't die with Commodore, and we should do something about it!

Perhaps mentioning Aeros (http://www.aeros-os.org/), that the platform includes support for different hardware platforms and one is even opensource. I personally do not know "reasons" to buy OS4 or MorphOS (not enough knowledge). Perhaps there are tutorials and videos and (neutral) information resources. I would include a page with links in my own page.

Agree, the netbook would be the best way to get old amiga users back at the price point quoted. Sadly Hyperion have fallen very quiet on this - its probably a dead project

I can't personally justify persuading anyone to come back to the Amiga platform just yet. I'd like to, I really would.

OS4 users seem to reduce "Amiga platform" to Hyperion and OS4. There is also a world outside OS4, you know?

Although this is a very nice idea, you may consider these facts: 1): it is spam, but as it is not directly intended to sell wares it might be aproved, 2): many programs were written in a time that guys 'n' dolls were studying on some university, highschool or polytechnics. You may find that quite a few email addresses are related to some university and, hence, probably will not get answered. Some writers posted their (disused) BSS address, while others even mentioned their home address. People may have even been moved and again your mail will not be answered.

I have some experiences with it because I tried to contact authors regarding my Aros distribution. Old emails are mostly not valid anymore. Sometimes you can google the authors but that is not always the case. It only works with newer entries (perhaps beginning with 2010)

Exactly! That's why I, with many French Amigans, go to all the places where we can meet people and show them AmigaOS is still alive.

When the os4-netbook arrives i know 3-4 ppl who will buy it. I also know a couple of more ppl who is curious/interested in os4-hardware but they want to wait bec lack of software like a browser that can play youtube videos and be able to connect to facebook and google+. They also want to see if there will be some kind of office suite.

I will buy the os4-netbook when it arrives and flash it wherever i go with a big amigasticker on it Dont underestimate the power of amiga!
