| Those who think America is in decline are confounded by this amazing technological feat. No other country could pull this off. America isn't in decline; it's politicians are. _________________ AmigaOne 500(update 6) / microA1(update 6) / Cubic IDE / Imagine Amiga 4000/1200/500/2500/1000 / VIC20 / C64 / SX64 / C128 / C16 / C116 / Plus/4 / PET B500 Windows 7 / 3GHz AMD Phenom 8GB RAM / Lightwave / Visual C++ |

With the cost of college tuition now out of range for the average American, only the rich can be well educated. How far do you think that will get us in the very near future? How much innovation do you see coming from the children of wealthy people?

I watched the transmission biting my fingers and went crazy-happy when the "wheels & the shadow" image came on the screen. This topic completely dominated my circle of friends as we're science fanboys and fangirls. It's amazing what NASA guys have done.

Now, now, the cold war is over, there's no reason for getting in our faces with your flag, we understand the importance of NASA and its work. Science is all about "standing on the shoulders of giants", we all use global contributions and global talent.
I understand your enthusiasm and I can assure you that we share your feelings, don't cut us off just because we happened to live in another country on another continent. _________________ OpenWindows Initiative. An interesting fact about this mission:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Science_Laboratory Quote:
Computers: The two identical on-board rover computers, called "Rover Compute Element" (RCE), contain radiation-hardened memory to tolerate the extreme radiation from space and to safeguard against power-off cycles. Each computer's memory includes 256 KB of EEPROM, 256 MB of DRAM, and 2 GB of flash memory.[45] This compares to 3 MB of EEPROM, 128 MB of DRAM, and 256 MB of flash memory used in the Mars Exploration Rovers.[46]
The RCE computers use the RAD750 CPU, which is a successor to the RAD6000 CPU used in the Mars Exploration Rovers.[47][48] The RAD750 CPU is capable of up to 400 MIPS, while the RAD6000 CPU is capable of up to 35 MIPS.[49][50] Of the two on-board computers, one is configured as backup, and will take over in the event of problems with the main computer.[45]
|
About the RAD750 CPU:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAD750 Quote:
The RAD750 is a radiation-hardened single board computer manufactured by BAE Systems Electronic Solutions.[1] The successor of the RAD6000, the RAD750 is for use in high radiation environments such as experienced on board satellites and spacecraft.[2] The RAD750 was released in 2001, with the first units launched into space in 2005.[1][3]
|
This is the interesting bit: Quote:
The RAD750 is based on IBM's PowerPC 750.[1] Its packaging and logic functions are completely compatible with the PowerPC 7xx family.[3]
|
The systems' OS is VxWorks, a custom real-time OS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_embedded_computer_systems_on_board_the_Mars_rovers

Only finnish embedded technology makes it possible.
(really, even though NASA is the main contributor, there are a lot others, example: pressure measutrement system has been developed and tested in Finland and it's built from finnish components from several companies. Almost every ship that has headed towards mars has had some finnish technology.)
Other than that: WHAT A WASTE!!!! Only some "my rocket is bigger than yours" thing. What really should be done is to explore more moon and asteroids that can be used for the benefit of earth. (moon and asteroids are realistic sources of rare materials)
"The RAD750 is based on IBM's PowerPC 750." Hey let's port MOS to it. Perhaps Martians could then view DVD video via Mplayer on it.... Last edited by KimmoK on 06-Aug-2012 at 05:52 PM.

| I still am using my two SE's with OS4.1, maybe we could work together with NASA to bring OS4.1 to spacecrafts.

| Spanish technology contributes to the system (REMS) environmental station measured, inter alia, soil temperature, air pressure, humidity and ultraviolet radiation, and antenna that facilitate data transmission and will directly contact the "rover" with Earth.

That is not quite fair to say. There are plenty of intelligent people in other countries around the globe. I think it comes down to priorities and funds.

Barking at the wrong tree; NASA thus far and I bet in the future concentrate on "science" missions, whereas commercial endeavours or even preparation for such would land into the private sector._________________ : AmigaOneXE (unmod.) 750FX/512 MB +stuff & AmigaOS 4.(0|1) : A1200/68060&96MB/SCSI/EM1200-Voodoo3 & OS 3.5 : A500/1MB : Pegasos (ff) 512 MB & MorphOS 1.4.5 Praise seitan. |

If I could I'd gladly donate some of my taxes to NASA. And if US citizens could send some cash to projects like LHC, wouldn't it be great? This is benefiting all of humans.
Anyway, lets not make this political matter, it's a triumph of human will and ingenuity. Somewhere in the world a future scientist was watching how much we can do. Maybe, once he'll grow a beard, he'll be in a control room, helping first manned flight to the Mars get down safely. I'll be dead by then, but it stills brightens my day._________________ OpenWindows Initiative. Port PS3 hardware to bananas. For free. Join today and receive expired $50 cupon from AI! |
