I have a question about the use of a Windows Menu Key keyboard with OS4.1.

As you know this type of Windows keyboard does not have the Right Windows key, but what it's called a "Menu Key" or "Action Key."

So how can I use this keyboard to do a soft reboot when there is no Right Windows key. What other short cuts or equivalent actions are available for the Windows Menu Key keyboard?

@WeiXing3D

Got to Prefs/UBoot, last tab "OS4 specific" (or something like that depending on your locale). At the bottom right you will find a check box "Map right window to menu button" which I believe will do what you want (i.e. give you a right Amiga button on your Win menu button).

If reboot is what you want, you could use the command C:Reboot and map using AllKeys (or even the standard FKey commodity) or simply just call from CLI.

I noticed that the previous owner of my system already downloaded allkeys. I found it under Works/Downloads as allkeys.lha

I presumed he installed it already, but I can't find the app. Any ideas on where to look for it?

@K-L

I haven't found uboot yet. Could you please give me the typical path and then tell me where to enter that information?

I'm really new to OS4.1. Sorry for the trouble.

I found the path, which in my case is: Amiga_OS4/Utilities/Commodities/Exchange, but what do I do next?

Like I said before, I'm new to OS4, so I will appreciate some extra guidance. Sorry.

@WeiXing3D

The path isn't where the AllKeys application is actually installed, it's just to the Exchange utility. If you open Exchange, it shows you a list of all the currently running "commodities", and AllKeys should be there if it's installed. If it's not in the list, it could still be installed but not in use. You could use the Find menu item to search for AllKeys either...

Commodities are usually small helper applications which are normally started when the system boots and do simple things in the background. Things like the screensaver, context-sensitive menus, Filer etc.

If you're not able to interrupt the boot process and go into the U-boot commandline you can always do the same setting from an AmigaOS shell using nvsetvar:

nvsetvar kbddev_norwin 1

You will then have to do a cold reboot after that. You can do that by typing in "reboot" and pressing return in the same shell (also pressing ctrl-alt-alt will do the same).

@WeiXing3D

UBoot is the first level booter, basically the first test based things you see when you turn on your computer. If you press... enter or space (it says what to do on screen), you can stop the boot process, and get into the text based UBoot command prompt and enter the setenv commands. Much like the PC counterpart of BIOS.

The program UBoot that should be in Prefs is the graphical interface for UBoot. Being new at AmigaOS 4, I really suggest you try to find the graphical UBoot prefs program, since it's much easier to use.

Do you have the original installation CD, or update CD:s? It should be on those aswell, if I remember correctly in the root of the CD in /System/Prefs or likewise (you might have to "Show all files" in order to see the System drawer). When you find it, merely drag it to SYS:Prefs/, and then start it from there.

To further explnain (or confuse ): to choose which Commodities are started upon boot is set using Prefs/Startup (or is it called WBStartup?).

UBoot prefs exist only on AmigaOne SE/XE (and Micro).

Salass00's solution is the good one.

@WeiXing3D

Welcome to the world of AmigaOS 4!

Judging by you signiture you are using a SAM 460ex

Uboot is the SAM's equivalent of bios. You can interupt the boot process by pressing the space bar as the machine boots, then set variables on the commandline or type menu and anset varaious options via the text based menu.

The easiest way to set UBoot variables though is to allow the SAM to boot all the way into OS4.1 then open a shell (there usually a shell icon in amidock) and use the NVSetVar command (Non Volatile Set Varaiable)

type NVGetVar for alist of what's allready set and type

NVSetVar name=value

to set a varaiable.

in this case you want

NVSetVar kbddev_norwin=1

you will need to reboot for this to take affect.

Allkeys is a commodity, the most likely place for it to be installed is

sys:Utilities/Commodities

You can see if it's allready running by using the exchange program.

If exchange is allready running press 'CTRL LeftALT HELP' (CTRL LEFTALT SCROLLLOCK on a win keyboard)

If exchange isn't running you can dinf it in sys:utilities/commoditites, click on it's icon to startit.

If you want to run allkeys and exchange every time you start the SAM then go to sys:prefs/WBStartup and drag the icons of the programs onto it's window. The press save.

If you are so new to amiga that you don;t undertsnd what sys: is then it's the assigned name of the volume (partition) you booted from. The Volume name is usaually "Workbench": ot oten for AmigaOS4 "AmigaOS4" the disk icon will likley have a boing ball on it. Double click on this to navigate you way to the drawers mention above.

Just for the record: *Only* Eyetech AmigaOnes feature an UBoot prefs program. Everything else have to use the NVSetVar/NVGetVar CLI commands (or direct access through UBoot prompt itself).

Oh, I had no idea! Sorry about that. That would also mean that I shouldn't find a nvgetvae/nvsetvarn my AmigaOne? Or? Have to check when I get home.

Wouldn't be hard to knock up a GUI using ProAction though. Hmm...

In addition, UBoot variables are not the same for all hardware. For example, you can change the UBoot background color on a µA1 by setting the "vga_bg_color" variable but that variable has no effect on a SAM440. I think we need a UBoot rule like:
DO NOT MAKE UBOOT CHANGE RECOMMENDATIONS WITHOUT SPECIFYING THE HARDWARE THAT IT APPLIES TO.
