I'm still dreaming.

Besides Brilliance 2, I loved using the Amiga to design game sprites. Deluxe paint was one of those programs, I miss.

This is purely just a fun concept page... dreaming.

Deluxe Paint for Amiga.

Mod's note: Re-sized image. Please keep to the image sizes as set forth in the TOS. Thank you.

TVPaint offers many of DPaint features (even improved in some areas - eg. management of brushes). Most importantly, it works on GFX cards (eg. OS4) and is available for free.

For 8 bit palette functions I can recommend PPaint.

Grafx2 - here on OS4depot - is quite similar in fact it clearly states its inspiration in the readme:

"GrafX2 is a bitmap paint program inspired by the Amiga programs Deluxe Paint and Brilliance. Specialized in 256-color drawing, it includes a very large number of tools and effects that make it particularly suitable for pixel art, game graphics, and generally any detailed graphics painted with a mouse."

@Nibunnoichi
I recommend GIMP 2.6. Runs great here on the WB driver

Probably you don't have to wait or dreaming too much

I never liked GIMP too much, i find it bloated and quite convoluted to use, i don't use it neither on Windows nor Linux... and i thought he was asking for a pixel oriented program

TVpaint is a great program, I think it's moved owners a few times. Bought that one when Newtek (Lightwave) owned it.

To have a modernized DPaint would be nice.

Nowdays you need to learn handfull of apps to do the same and to use 10x the time. I could do animation in far less than a minute after A4k was up (and it would have been broadcast quality in mid 90's).

Most likely I just need to learn those other tools...
(annoying that one is limited to 256 colors, another can do animation, another has 24bit painting ... Only 24bit was hard for dpaint, but you could do HAM8 stuff.)

Wow, fantastic concept image!

No need to miss Dpaint if you use OS 4 though, Deluxe Paint III and IV run just fine on OS4, never got 5 to work though.

@danwood

The best DPaint was III. DPaint IV was buggy and a bit slow and DPaint V was actually crap.

@Phantom

I preferred 4 and 4 AGA really for the HAM modes, never found it buggy personally, what problems did it have?

4 AGA runs ok on OS4, apart from the animation feature iirc.

@danwood

I remember DPaint IV was buggy, unless they published an update-fix. But I remember that it was very slow compared to DPaint III.

@invent

Nice concept. Reminds me a little of the paint tool I did back in 1996 for my final year uni project. I had intended to completely re-write it at some point but never got around to it, and then Photogenics 5 came out doing a similar thing.

Looks nice, its almost makes me wont to resurrect a project I was working on.

I love to use your graphic if you don't mind, provided a picture of buttons pressed and not pressed.

No modern paint program beats the power and simplicity of Deluxe Paint. If they updated it for OS4 I would buy it.

I wonder if Electronic Arts owns the copyright.

i admit, good concept image, even if too large for this forum. im not sure if dpaint interface suits 24 bit well, but what i see comes close. however there were 24bit functions clones like ppaint i sppose, i have not seriously used a paint package on amiga for long.. and it shows.
