@kolla: there are already newer Deluxe Paint versions, as well as other painting programs.

I enjoyed DPaint. Photoshop/Gimp users probably don't think they need something like DPaint, but they are really two different types of tools. Gimp/Photoshop/Photogenics are made primarily to touch up photographs. They do a great job at that as well, but a Bitmap paint program like DPaint is better and easier for making pictures from scratch. On the PC I use Paint.net. There are other programs that do different functions as well and are suited for different tasks better. Vector paint programs are better for things that are going to be scaled to a large size. They are able to make anything look sharp at any scale. The 3d programs out there are also a different kind of tool designed for a different purpose. Generating scenes from 3 dimensional objects is fun as well.

I don't just use one type of program, but use many different programs, even transferring the results of one into another type of program just to make it easier to do what I want.

Personally I always preferred Brilliance II, for animation I prefered Fantavision.

@Severin

Ah yes, FantaVision, totally forgot about it. Where did it end up? :)

@kolla

Hi Kolla, I noticed that the software (FantaVision) was also for Mac and PC.

Did both programs (DPaint / Brilliance) have the ability to morph brushes?, for some reason I can only think Brilliance did this. You could for example set the sprite/tile size and how many morph frames.

@invent

Hm, I don't recall. I never had the need to do morphing, only did "cartoonish" animations. At some point I even made enough money that it paid my entire vacation, one month backpacking Europe.

I also used DPaint when working for univ, dept psychology, to create visual stimulation for various cognitive tests. It eas pretty cool hooking the Amiga 600 into the lab equipment (various timers, liggers etc), triggering off animations being played using ARexx listening to the serial port. A couple of years ago I saw the researchers are still using the same animations that I created, only revamped (3D) and now running on Windows PC :)

Deluxe Paint has some nice features i have never found in any paint program. A really good grid, much better than most paint programs I've tried and a symmetry tool you can make kaleidoscope effects very easily.
