Pre-release

The Friedens mentioned this at the Bremen show:

Quote:
OS4 hat einen lauffähigen Stand erreicht, sodass wahrscheinlich in den nächsten 14 Tagen die Prerelease-Version an alle AmigaOne-Besitzer verteilt wird.

Roughly translated:

OS4 has reached a run-able condition, so that it truly appears that the Prerelease version will be distributed to all Amiga-One owners in the next 14 days.

Yay!

Paul

edit. . . aawe shucks, I got so excited I didn't go back to click the "Read More" to see that the whole thing was already translated.

Doh!!

@Paul

I read it this morning and it is I can think about.

I have a strong feeling that this will be the turning point, that we will see increasing software titles coming out and more people buying the A1 like never before. I can't wait to show my firends once I get it installed and buy Pagestream and a few others to have something to show. And it will be really nice playing around with AREXX in a meaningful way.

Good on you Hyperion!!

@Paul

DON'T expect this 14 day 'deadline' to be solid.

DON'T get upset if you don't get it within the next four weeks.

Not that most people will listen, but anyway. Looking forward to the whine fest in 2-3 weeks when people haven't got their copy yet.

/Björn

@samo79

Those two weeks refer to the amount of time required to get to gold master status.

it doesn't include production time of at least 10 business days.

Hyperionmp, no matter what you guys say, no matter how carefully you phrase it to mislead no-one -- we are so eager we'll always interpret to mean the shortest possible time, the fact that it said within 14 days was translated into my mind to mean "will arrive in the post tomorrow".

Thanks for the warning though -- I will now ignore everything you say and sit eagerly by the mail box ; )

Whereas I do see the AmigaOne as the future direction for Amiga Computing, I have decided to hold back for the moment and run the BPPC version of OS4 - see what goes on. Mainly I'm waiting to see what happens with Elbox and their SharkPPC solution, because regardless of whether I choose to purchase an A1 in the future, I'll not want to sell my classic Amiga setup (it's been with me too long) so I'd definately want to support the Shark from Elbox as well. Of course, in the meantime I would hope that the specifications of the A1 will have improved and then I'll look to buy one.

If the pre-release is almost ready for the AmigaOne system, when can we expect a similar release for the BPPC and CSPPC? Is there even a time-scale on that yet, or are the BPPC and CSPPC versions so far behind that nobody would hope to comment on when it'll be released. What problems are you (Hyperion) experiencing with developing OS4 for classic Amigas? Are the multitude of DIFFERENT expansion combinations on classic Amigas a problem for OS4? For example, I run a mianly Elbox based system - I run the PowerFlyer, MediatorSX, lots of Mediator cards... etc etc etc. Some people use GREX, others use Prometheus. Some people dont use a PowerFlyer, they use other IDE solutions. Some people still use Zorro. Some people dont even use an expansion bus at all, because they use a BVIsion for their graphics.
What effect does this have on OS4 development? What can we hope to have supported??

Maybe these questions belong in a thread all of their own...

Brian

I like the bit where it says

Given the amount of inaccurencies in that "report", I am not surprised that I am misquoted again.

Sigh.

What I said is that with a bit of luck we can get the CD mastered in two weeks. There is an additional overhead involved in produciton and distribution.

I really wish that people would actually ask me before they supposedly quote me. The thing about the "forefront drivers" is equally inaccurate.

@Rogue & Orgin

Thanks for the reminders about the little details, like distibution. We really do listen - even if we do sit watching our (E-)mail boxes.

Many thanks for your continued efforts, and patience with our whining.

And, "I feel your pain" (at work I may finish a few Gig of bridge structural analysis runs today, but it does take more than 5 minutes to transform the raw numbers into a mere hundred pages of human-usable information - and make 10 copies w/CD for distribution.)

None the less ... I wait with "bated breath" for the joy of relaxing at home with OS4, after a day of hand-to-hand combat with Win2k in the office.

Regards,
JCC

Oops. I've been out spreading your mis-quote. Sorry.
I DID understsnd, cuz I'm not stoopyd, that the 14 days did not include burning and distribution time.

"Well. Ollie, here's another fine mess...."

Again with the sorrys. Still partying, though!

@JCC

sounds like you wanna nice mainframe you do. do it in a 10th the time, and cause you less bovva. I dunno, sometimes all this wonderful new technology like GUIs and object orientation just get right in the way, sometimes !

Never used Win2k. how does it compare to NT4 (which sucks @ss btw)

@various esteemed members of Hyperion - how does one ensure receipt of his copy (when ready !!) of OS4 ? via dealers or straight from you guys ? do we receive a BIOS update sfx with it, or do we need to go find one ?

Sorry for passing it on and highlighting it by translating it yet again. I had thought that amiga-news.de was pretty reliable.

On the bright side, it DOES say _distribute_ it in 14 days.

Besides thinking amiga-news.de was accurate, I wouldn't have expected to get a personal answer from you guys any more than I'd expect to get a personal reply from the President of the U.S. at the White House. I'm just an unknown end user. . . not even a beta tester.

Anyway, hopefully everything goes well at this point, and in 14 days, it will be ready to be mastered and distributed.

Paul

For speed and scriptability (using REXX!) most of my apps are written in C and run from the shell.

Quote:

Win2K is better, but I have a high pain threshold (having used everything from IBM's JCL, to Amiga OS 1.3 to 3.9, by way of CP/M, M$DOS 3.x to 6.x, Apple ][, PrimeOS, DEC 10, PDP 11s & VAXs (of various flavors) and UNIX in 1977). Office mates also know me for exclaiming "Cursed software from the Evil Empire!"

I would be happy to save Hyperion the shipping & handling (and time! ) if they place an ISO of the beta on-line for registered A1 owners.

JCC

Here's a question:

If you could go back in time, would you take on (as a company) OS4 all over again?
