| folks,
one of the ideas from amiwest 2012 was that intuitionbase.com should run a contest to see what are the favorite applications of next-generation amiga users. so we thought we'd start off this week with a few categories: the best paint programs and the best image editors.
we've selected a few nominees from the OS3 and OS4 software lists we have over on the site and are looking for what you think is the best image editor to use on a next-generation amiga in this thread. positive discussion is encouraged! we'll be looking at other categories in the coming weeks and will post the list of everyone's favorites as well as the favorites of the editors at intuitionbase.com. have fun!
the nominees are:
* arteffect v4.0 * fxPaint v2.0 * GIMP (via the amicygnix package) * imageFX v4.5 * photogenics v5.0

The GIMP
then ArtEffect (for ease of use) or ImageFX (for possibilities). _________________ A1200PPC / Sam440ep / Sam460ex / X1000 / X5000 OS4.1 |

both of those titles were placed in the best paint program category since it was thought they were more focused on image creation rather than photo editing. an arbitrary difference i know, but the polls only allow for so many choices.

Photogenics.
However if this is a best for OS4 poll, then it's incredibly unstable under OS4 so perhaps not worthy of winning. Having said that, I never got on with ImageFX, GIMP didn't work very well under AmiCygnix last time I tried, and I've not used ArtEffect or fxPaint enough to have an opinion (I only had a demo of ArtEffect, and although it looks pretty good, I was - and still am - waiting for the OS4 native version)

I really like certain features of each of these programs, and tend to use each one for different things. Overall, it seems that ImageFX does the most that I need to do. But one thing I like about the Amiga is that we have ALL of these programs available to us. Each one is a wonderful program....just get them all! Support continuing development!

Well, it depends, for me it's usably slow and I'm glad we have it under AmiCygnix. Sure it's not reactive like a native software or like under linux but I prefer to use the GIMP than other image editors on OS4. | I voted for ImageFX because I bought it, found it to be very powerful and yet feel I haven't tapped all its capabilities. However, I recently got hold of Photogenics in its last Amiga version and find it to be very, very cool indeed. You can't have just one! _________________

I concur on all points.
The only thing I find slow, and had been warned by Edward, is the excruciatingly slow loading of JPEG images. The only good point there is I start an image loading and get off my duff for a minute or so.

I have found my install of Photogenics 5.0 Release 121 to be fairly stable on my X1000. Do you have a different version? I am assuming this was the last/latest, but I'm not certain of it._________________

I have the same version. Unless there are some patches I'm not aware of, that's the latest.
It's not so much that it crashes, just certain threads appear to stop working. Particulary when trying to save, it goes through the motions and then stops doing anything. However, the toolbar will still react to everything if there is another image open (or it'll open a new one quite happily, I think). It's weird.
I think I tried adding it to compatibility prefs and it didn't help. It's frequent enough to be annoying, but not so bad that I'd stop using it. I don't use it that often anyway, but it's fantastic at what it does and I've got used to how it works. I was trying to do something simple on GIMP (under Linux) and it took me far longer than it would have done with Photogenics.

| Have only used GIMP and ArtEffect, have both but voted GIMP as I tend to use it more. If only there were a fully native version!
Never used any of the others and they seem difficult to get hold of.

None of them, I vote for ADPro which is still working well and fast, easy to use and just does it's job without any bells and whistles.
Edit: ranting a bit...
I also don't think gimp should be allowed, as it's not an amiga program, it does not run natively as amicygnix to me is an EMULATOR, it runs it's own amiga incompatible desktop to allow you to run stuff compiled for it not for OS4. A program that is needed to run software that wont run natively is an emulator, I don't care if it's officially a net app.
Emulated software should not be allowed... Last edited by Severin on 29-Oct-2012 at 10:34 AM. Last edited by Severin on 29-Oct-2012 at 10:23 AM.

| On my classic and emulator its definitely Photogenics, largely thanks to all the great tutorials the program got in my Amiga magazines but for my X1000 Gimp cant really be beaten, it can be a little slow but worth the trade to have a program as good as this in my opinion. _________________ AmigaNG, YouTube, LeaveReality Studio |
