Hi guys

I decided to install latest version of Yam and found V2.8 with all latest MUI libs.

After reboot, I find this URL showing what to put and where but instructions are for older version of Yam [as layout is changed]:

http://bytemyvdu.wordpress.com/2013/01/21/setting-up-gmail-with-yam-and-amiga-experience/

Of course - it didn't work with older YAM and especially with this one.

I got following error:

Couldn't connect to host 'pop.gmail.com' of account
'pop.gmail.com'.

The mail server didn't respond within the predefined
time frame and therefore timed out.

(06/09/2013 10:08 PM)

Can somebody write what exactly to type [and where] so I could use Google mail through YAM [like on iOS or Android], to avoid slow loading GMail through OWB each time I want to check email.

@djnick

You can acess Gamil from a browser and In
Settings
Forwarding and Pop/Imap
Set "Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on"
to only get new mail from now on and not the old ones .

My ISP migrated to GMAIl ten days ago so I am new to thes quirdks .

@Spectre660

Thank you! It WORKED! Finally it acts as it should. I scaled UP some fonts and I am very happy how Yam looks now :) All works!

Btw, I will use this opportunity to ask some questions regarding Yam:

- Can I have HTML view there [for messages?] and how?

@djnick

I have it working using the old OWB to display the html emails.It does not seem to work with MUIOWB. This is the old version of OWB that it works with.
http://os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=network/browser/owb.lha

YAM
Configuration
Mime
MIME type Text/html
file extension html
Description
Viewer Programs:Internet/OWB/owb %s

you would have to adjust the path to were you have the OWB on you Sam.

you can also add a public screen for the dispaly to open on by adding %p "Yam" for example if you have Yam opening on a screen called YAM.

To display the Html email just click on the HTML attachment at the bottom of the displayed email in Yam

@Spectre660

Thank you very much! I would never found this. Anyway here all MIMEs are empty so I had to add one with + and select text/html & select OWB. I will see if it works.

Btw - how to set to all new emails pop up on the top? Now all appears on the bottom.

What I want is to - click on file listers: Status, From, Subject or Date and sort by Date. I have tried to save MUI, Prefs, Snapshot... nothing saves message list state and always put new messages at the bottom...?

I use the following in Configuration
Read
Mail Reading settings
Headers Custom (From|Date|Subject|X-Declude-Sender)
I then click the Received Tab when viewing Emails and it sorts by date received

@Spectre660

Thank you Spectre... Well I've found everything but can't find Receiver tab. Where is it?

I've tried everything for now and couldn't find the way to get New messages arrives on top. They are always placed on the bottom of the list :(

p.s. just set up programs - PDF and HTML to open properly. Thank you. [My opinion is - this is all very hard and not user friendly for new Amiga users] :) If this all will be set by default - users will be more happy. AmigaOS has lots of potential but needs lots of improvements on basic level].

@djnick

The tabs are at the top of the email list.
You should see a little arrow pointing either up or down in one of the tabs.
This indicates what category the email is sorted by and which way.

@Spectre660

Well I know but the problem is this: when I start Yam its tab is set to default sorting date from botom to top. When new message comes - I have to click on Date tab, it sorts then from top to bottom [which is good!] BUT then my cursor comes to the bottom, so I have to scroll all to the top just to see new message... :( It is strange that MUI saves windows, positions, columns [tabs] width but not sortings :(

@djnick
sorting is a yam settings, not MUI

edited:
you must order the the folder the way you like, then right-click,
the menu appear then choose: Folder -> Order -> Save
the order prefs are saved, at least version 2.5 works this way,
I hope it's the same with 2.8

I think YAM needs a wizard for these types of things. It is just too complicated when setting up emails. I don't know why it has so many settigns. I don't see other mailers doing it this way. They tend to extract what they need or otherwise get you to set POP and SMTP settings. If only YAM was that simple!

I've tried to setup Yahoo in YAM for a friend but just gave up! It was just too complicated and YAM just made it worse. I must have spent an hour looking at server errors from YAM. I wonder, is there an easy way to setup Yahoo in YAM? I think I should submit a bug report over the over complications!

@pvanni & others

Thank you very much! Yam now works very good, sorts all things etc.

But there is one more important question regarding YAM:

For example, on iOS or Android when I start Email program, it downloads all new files. When you mark them READ - they will appear as READ everywhere [on all devices using GMail]. So if I click on Unread - Email program will send command that this and that Emails are checked as Unread and they ALL appear as Unread on ALL devices.

Currently marking file as Unread shows as Unread only on Amiga [while on other devices it has no changes].

I hope I explained well... !? So I guess I will have to set-up Yam to send commands back to GMail server and vice versa...?

Yes it is very very hard to set up Gmail [and I guess - Yahoo too]. You will have to be real System Admin to make email work :) Not for ordinary people...

@djnick

They might use IMAP where as YAM uses POP. With IMAP the emails stay on the server and have a folder structure like you can do in YAM. So whar is marked as read or unread is done so on the server. Perhaps you could call it emails in the cloud.

YAM only knows POP AFAIK, and so what it does is download each mail to your local Amiga computer. So what is marked read or unread only occurs on your local Amiga.

That's how I understand it anyway.

Despite its name, SimpleMail supports HTML. I thought it also did IMAP but can't see it in the guide.

@Hypex + @DjNick

Yam is a "POP" client where "Gmail" on Android has become an IMAP tool from what I understand.

so anything with IMAP generally works with the Email as "Network Email FileSystem"

yet POP downloads and works with a copy on the machine you use (it can be cleared from the server so only the receiving machine gets the message...)

I use an Android phone and Webmail myself... with Yam used occasionally (it can't see ALL of the mail I want to DL at all)

YAM desperately needs IMAP support.

Hi there

I'm James, the author of ByteMyVdu. I came across your thread tonight while doing a random Google of my site. I always like a nosey to see if anyone is linking to the site.

I'm sorry my fix didn't help you on this occasion, the base machine was aMicro AmigaOne running OS4 with the latest updates. I'm not sure why the guide didn't work, but i will look in to it. In the mean time, I shall update the guide to include this new info, in the hopes it will help future Miggy users

Kindest regards
James

Have Gmail/Yam changed something lately, this used to work for me but since Feb 12th I've been unable to connect to Gmail using the above settings via YAM.

I now get the error "Couldn't initialize TLSv1/SSLv2 session with host 'pop.gmail.com'" error.

I just downloaded SimpleMail and that connects fine though!
