Linux on on Sam440ep
The Current Sam440ep kernels versions are the problem.
The Sam440ep version is to old to work with anthing beyond Debian Squeeze.
If anyone with a Sam440ep or Sam440ep-flex wants to install Debian Squeeze
and have a try at compiling a newer kernel then have a look at this thread.

http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1024

I was able to reinstall Squeeze on my Sam440ep-flex yesterday using a damaged Radeon 9250 but have been unable to get it to work like before with a Radeon HD 4850 and pci to pcie adapter. So my display is very fuzzy and I cant do to much.

@Spectre660

My install turned out to be Lenny.
Thats why the RadeonHD cards would not work.
could not really see the screen clearly with my bad radeon 9250 card.
Squeeze is not yet in archive.debian.org .

Managed to create another custom Install CD to install the base Squeeze 6.07 system.
Then updated to a full Gnome system.
The Radeon HD4350 that I tried works.
Had to adjust the /etc/network/interfaces file and /etc/apt/sources.list file after the base install and before installation of the gnome stuff.
This is probably because I used the Kernel and ramdisk from Acube's Lenny installer which does not handle the Sam onboard network chip so well.
The custom install CD does install the latest available kernel and modules which handles
the onboard network stuff once you boot into the installed base system and adjust the ethernet config in the network file mentioned above.

It is nice to have Gnome on my Sam440ep-Flex again.

Oops, must have skimmed there.

So how good is the kernel for the hardware?

Compiling a standard Debian Linux 2.6.32-5 kernel for the Sam440ep shouldn't be a big problem, if no platform patches are required. However you may have to patch the kernel source code for proper non-coherent DMA support in the ALSA sound drivers.

@Geri

I was hoping to get a Sam440ep owner with more Linux experience than me interested or someone willing to take a shot at cross compiling a kernel or even Acube.
The kernel that I am using has an experimental agp gart.
Onboard sound and video playback not working .
Sound did not work under the Lenny installation but video playback did .

Apart from onboard sound and video playback things seem ok.
have to look into my configuration to see if that is the problem.

Experimental agp gart!? Does the Sam440ep have an AGP bridge?

Working with Radeon HD4850 and pci to pcie adaptor.
Initial install needs a Radeon 9250 though,

You could compile a Debian 3.2 backports kernel. That should require fewer patches (ALSA DMA is fixed in this case) and is updated with security fixes from time to time.
Also the newer Radeon card may work, but I'm not sure about that.

May give its a shot at some time.
may try setting up a cross compile system on a PC using Linux on USB thumbdrive.
My Kernel compile skills are 0.
Seems like there is not that much interest.

The Sam460ex kernels also have an issue with RadeonHD cards and the
text display. You have to use a debug cable to do the install using a teminal program on another computer.

Well, I can try to compile a Sam440ep kernel on my A1SE, if you give me a base kernel config (I couldn't access the Dropbox link). Are there any other platform patches required (for example for the PCIGART functionality)?

Be aware however that it will take some time. Also I have no machine to test the kernel on.

sounds promising .
Not sure about the patches.
I can test the kernel.
This is one Linux thing that I undestand how to do on Sam machines.
Reposting the kernel config link .

Also found some some configs from Cruxppc

Manged to get a graphics speed up by removing the file /etc/modeprobe.d/drm-disable.
Not needed for Debian 6.07 .
Plus a few tweaks in xorg.conf. now no more invisible cursor.
definitely a usable environment.

Cruxppc kernel patch .

http://cruxppc.org/viewvc/iso32/tags/release-2.7/kernel/linux-2.6.36.4-Sam440ep.patch?diff_format=f&view=log&pathrev=92

Xeno74 has tried to compile a 3.10.3 kernel for the Sam440ep.
So far it seems to have the wrong Load Address.
