After the first failed attempt to get funds for its development, a new Kickstarter project for a modern Wings remake has been opened, called "Wings: Remastered Edition": http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/850516062/wings-remastered-edition

This time the funding goal is much lower, 85.000$ for a simple, HD remake of the original Amiga game. There are now 29 days left for the funding goal to be reached. Various additional features will be added if higher funding levels will be reached: in case 95.000$ will be collected, a Mac version will be released too and, most interestingly, the sources will be available for a Linux and AmigaOS port too.

What a wonderful development! I really do wish them the best on this. It looks like they could make a very good job of it. I will dl the PC version for now to see what the improvements look like presently...

not interested if there's no port to AmigaOS 4.1. Take Cope-Com's lead & shiow the world we're still here !

Give the StarterKick a little time. If they go beyond their goal then you would have the sources for an Amiga version.

I am sure there will be interested parties in the Amiga community to port the game. It is such an iconic piece of Amiga history, I would be surprised if it didn't make its way to the Amiga in some, way, shape or form.

ah but you're missing my point. I want to see the AmigaOS logo on the first page of their website since they proudly advertise their past achievements on the Amiga platform...again man up & follow Cop-Com's lead !

btw, just sent a message to Cinemware saying just that.

Awesome! I skimmed over that part of the kickstarter! I was going to back them (again) anyhow, but since they have actually said the source will be released for Linux and AmigaOS porting, I'm all in!

@Varthall

the AmigaOS part is probably connected with the cinemaware thing that made it possible to get the classics bundled with os4.1 via contribs.

lets hope this one goes through so we can get a new wings game on Amiga even though if it's "just" AmigaOS4 ;)

Just to check it out, I downloaded the demo they have available, and the game has definitely been "prettied-up".

It's been so long since I played this game, that I don't recall for sure, but the aiming scheme seems like they've maybe changed it. First you have to get close enough to your target for it to turn red, and then when you have the sights sufficiently close to centered, the target turns green, at which point you can shoot it. Is this the same as the original game? Like I said, it's been a while, but I honestly don't recall the targeting system being like that......

Good to see that they went away and made a playable demo. I hope the Oliver twins would do the same with Dizzy's Return.

Ok, I think you are right and it would be nice to see the Amiga logo there centre stage. It is a shame it is not. Let's see how things develop.

@Canfod

It was not. Just a crosshairs reticle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEIARv4zpCk

Next you'll tell me it has auto-targetting and auto-pilot also, just so the kids don't have to engage their brains

Whew! Wings was one of my absolute favs, and judging by the Youtube videos it seems they managed to capture the spirit, I'll give it a try ASAP :)

Why should i fund a project that is not amiga related?
If opening the sources mean finding directx apis, well, you can't call it a port to the amiga. It's a total rewrite.
No, thanks.

@rebraist

It may not even be C/C++, which would also spell trouble.

You could adjust the engine speed in the original? this feels like a different game :(

@olegil

Thanks for the link - totally never thought to check Youtube for a video, even though you can find almost anything on there.

Now that I've watched that video, and confirmed what I thought, I really hope they don't go ahead with the stupid targeting system they have in the demo. Another thing that's quite different, which I also suspected, is that in the demo you only need to get one or two bullets on target and it blows up, whereas in the original Amiga version, as shown in that video, it generally takes numerous bullets to take down the enemy.

Although they've prettied it up, and supposedly are going with all the original missions, and the music is the same, but better, I'm not so sure they haven't screwed up the actual gameplay, if this demo is representative of what's to come.....

Ok, just played this demo a bit more..... turns out you can turn off the dumbed-down targeting system, so you just use the crosshairs..... much better! Totally overlooked that before. Seems a bit tougher than the original, at least on the 2nd difficulty level. Hopefully joystick/joypad use gets implemented properly(my Thrustmaster joypad does nothing, even after changing the settings in the input options window), because this kind of game just seems made for that kind of control scheme, rather than keyboard & mouse.

@Canfod

Shooting a machine gun turret with a machine gun should not generally cause much of an explosion, so I for one think I'll stick to the old version.

Played a little bit with the demo yesterday evening.
Yes, you can se the game to skip the targetting system and stick to the crosshair.
Seemed very playable, not much different from how I recall the old game to be, the Joypad input is handled pretty well and the spirit seems to be remained untouched, considering it's just a Demo it's promising to be a pretty good game!
