So OpenPower CPU's can be connected directly to a GPU through NVLink connection when other CPU's are limited to PCIe 3.

not necessarily all of them, but POWER8+ will have support for nvlink and the pascal GPUs for HPC applications. POWER9 is 'rumored' to have further enhancements.

What about making an X10000 with Power8 and Tesla P100 (-> XP800) sub 5000 EUR (including taxes and AmigaOS license) !?

That will be surely a major seller. Since it's less than half of projected Tesla P100 price.

@Rose

Yeah, it looks those are for high performance computing and not for other type of computing. Some DGX-1 node is 129000 dollars. Where did you find price of P100 ?

@tlosm

Since the Bios and Schematics are free, i wonder if A-eon and Acube may get a new MB out of this

So, how likely is this to drive the price of new desktop-style PPC down, and by how much?

Google and Rackspace are designing a server based on IBM's upcoming Power9 processor, a sure sign that Intel is no longer the only game in town for cloud service providers.

IBM's Power chips hit the big time at Google

@AmigaBlitter

That's not much of a roadmap, as it ends with the CPU used in the X1000

NXP still has the POWER variant on top of their road maps, but their open about the fact that most customers are pushing for faster ARM (though this is not so easy).

What's funny is that the things they have to do to make ARM keep up with data throughput is what they should have done 5 years ago to make PPC keep up with data throughput. The T4240 has the CPU power, but the offloading engine for PCIe and ethernet traffic falls FAR short of expectations. Example. You can set up three PCIe controllers of 32Gbps (each way) each, for a total aggregate bandwidth of 192Gbps. The PCIe is linked to memory through a 53Gbps processing engine. So that's 139Gbps of PCIe bandwidth wasted already. What's the point?

Power 9 again: http://www.infoworld.com/article/3110790/processors/ibms-blazing-power9-chip-is-coming-and-heres-what-you-need-to-know.html

"IBM will license the Power9 architecture to companies that want to build custom chips. So it's possible you'll see non-IBM Power9 chips available in the future."
