@Hammer

OK...let me (kind of) address these last comments.
Yes, I have X64 systems (several), including my i7 powered Lenovo laptop.

AND, you could have gone there, like "Where is the PPC portable, laptop/tablet etc., that I can substitute for my X64 hardware?"

Also, the real issue has ALWAYS been software availability. It was a problem in the '80s and '90s and since we are now such a tiny market its far worse.

Legacy or NG, this problem will NOT be going away.

As to hardware performance, Power8 performs damned well, but right now its aimmed at servers.
And btw, wtf could you possibly be doing with the hardware you guys have quoted that has much utility for a single user?
Also, the power envelop isn't an issue for me as 130 watts isn't that high, especially if you consider AMDs production of 220 watt cpus.

And cost? Raptor Engineering is aimming at between $3100 to $3700 for the Talos board (with the processor), not just the processor.
And the Tyan systems I mentioned?
Their starting costs (for the ENTIRE system) are LESS than the proposed price for a Talos board.
So keep quoting prices on Intel processors that cost several thousand dollars because it really serves to shoot your argument down.

Personally, I LOVE alternatives, because without them to keep Intel on its toes, we'd end up with crap like the old P4s (you can thank AMD for helping to kill that poorly designed line of cpus).
And the i7 laptop I mentioned? Doesn't have a discrete gpu, so graphics performance? Not so hot. I've compared it to AMD based laptops that have weaker cpus with better built in gpus and the Intel based hardware does not fair well in the comparison.

Of course, this could mean I need to spend more on my laptops (and get one with a discrete gpu).

Amiga has always been about alternatives.
If you want to go in the direction you keep mentioning, by all means do so.
And you can use Windows or OSX to power it (because Linux doesn't really come off well in comparison either).

I don't want that in my hobbyist hardware.
Its boring.

@AmigaBlitter

After a quick look at the current openpower's consortium members, i was wondering in what activities companies like acer, broadcom, american megatrends and msi could be interested.

Probably in favor of the new http://openpowerfoundation.org/

@Beans

The Raptor Talos is now up on crowdsource site for contributions here

$4100 for motherboard. Yikes! But in maybe a days time they already have 11 takers. I need to save up a bit before hopefully joining them, have 61 days left to do so.

@AmigaBlitter

Not only was the price raised to $4100, but if you read the listing, that is without the processor which costs about $1200.

So we are really talking about a $5300 investment.

And they are asking $18,000 for the entire server.

So yes, a Tyan system is less expensive.

Qualcomm to acquire NXP
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/10/27/qualcomm_acquires_nxp_semiconductors_for_47_billion/

Nxp merged with freescale, now nxp has been acquired by Qualcomm.

@AmigaBlitter

I was waiting for someone to post about that.

One thing is that this is not good for us, but I don't think it's good at all. The only way to save any money consolidating like this, is to reduce competition. Freescale and NXP were HUGE on industrial ARM, while Qualcomm does portable ARM. I have a hard time imagining Qualcomm being as good as Freescale and NXP when it comes to industrial support...

Who will do a very good industrial ARM chip with PCIe and GigE now?

Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.

this sentence has got my attention:

"There will also be different chips for running either Linux or traditional Power ecosystems."
