Dave Haynie talks at VCF East on April 6, 2014 about developing the various Amiga systems, up into the last days of Commodore in April 1994.

Cool! But at an hour long I'll have to watch it later. The sun is out and my gardens are calling me.

Thanks for pointing us to it.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Ah, she beat me to the punch! Well, there were at least 4 more videographers (including me) filming Dave. My version won't be ready until I do a little bit of sound tweaking and editing before I process the file. Perhaps by the end of the week, it will be uploaded. And there's that video of Zach Weddington presenting some clips from his upcoming Viva Amiga movie...

Thank you very much! A good summary of things from back in the day. Dave Haynie really is an inspiration. To achieve so much with so few resources and little long term guidance/vision from management! It's such a shame the A3000+ wasn't launched with the DSP and souped up 040 board etc

A 3000+ with AGA, 040 and DSP was ready to go in 1991 but management killed it :(.

That would have been some machine, the A3000+...

The dream would be to continue looking at ways of building AAA+ using FPGA, then we can have "custom chip" based Amiga again with the enhancements the community wanted.

It is a shame Natami did not make it. That would have helped that possibility a bit.

For years whilst owning my A1200, I so wanted AAA, with 16 bit Audio and Dsp included. What a shame it never came out. Kept on thinking the awesome demo's that would have been released for a AAA machine...

:: sigh ::

BTW, does anyone know or have a definitive list of AAA specifications and what a AAA machine would have been able to do if pushed hard?

Yea. It was a good plan and made it so far. Dave Haynie even gave it the nod as the right way to go.

The Dave Haynie archive has it all and more:

http://www.devili.iki.fi/mirrors/haynie/

Many of the AAA gfx modes would be outdated today as there is plenty of bandwidth but as Dave says, it would have been industry leading if it had come out as early as it should have. There were many debates on the Natami forum about keeping more of AAA and it's gfx modes (nostalgia and tribute) but most just doesn't make sense today. Many of the limitations of AAA can be removed in a modern fpga so it's possible to do better today. They are still kool concepts and definitely worth reading if you are interested.

Not to mention the dreams of so many Amiga users. I remember when the announcement that Commodore went under as being very depressing.

Likewise. I was in HMV (Record Store) buying some Reading Festival tickets. I wondered over to the magazine stand to see the broken C= logo on the front of Amiga Format. I had to buy it and read it on the way home on the bus. Amazing how you remember where you were where.

I'll watch the Hazy Dave video later, thanks for the nod.

I never wanted an Amiga with no chance of software support and there would hardly be any software support for the SAGA modes of Natami. I remembered how the Natami team came up with the idea of supporting SDL in Hardware because of the software problems.

BTW.: Dave Haynie on AAA (Dave Haynie, Team Amiga ML, 3/5/99):

Gateway/AI would have been insane to continue AAA. It would have been
revolutionary if released in 1990, pretty cool in 1992, ok in 1994 (the
earliest it could have been released on the schedule we had, with a
healthy Commodore). Today, it would be a horribly expensive thing with
less graphics performance than any old everyday $10 PCI-based SVGA
graphics chip. There is simply no point whatsoever. And that's spelled
"HAYNIE"...

@Arko

That is good to know Arko... Needed to develop an AAAA Amiga then :)

Anyway, I guess we have to make do with what is available now, Classic or NG, and make the most of it...

I'm remembering how to do Laplace transforms right now. No one ever asked if I could do them in an interview, and I've never used them before, and had long since forgotten everything but the name. It's time to once again become someone that knows how to do those things.

And not long after that, the Cranberries song Zombie was #1 on the radio..
I mean for me whenever I hear that song it makes me think of Commodore going down..
