Pretty good news for Morphos users with Apple hardware: MorphOS 3.6 is going to get official driver support for the inbuild WLAN cards Airpor extreme. Advanced MorphOS users may apply to participate the semi public beta testing of that driver right now.

http://www.amiga-news.de/en/news/AN-2014-04-00046-EN.html

The driver will be part of MorphOS - no extra charge for it.

@Dragster

About time???

That is a huge task that they could have easily just said "we already have support for wireless networking with our completed Atheros driver, why spend additional programming resources on Apple Airport Extreme?"

I applaud the MorphOS Dev. Team for choosing the harder road of tackling this daunting task, and look forward to the completion of this new driver for both my G4 PowerBook, and G4 MacMini systems. I am wondering if this driver will also work with the older Airport cards for G4 PowerMac systems? Probably not.

Great news for MorphOS users.

@amigadave

Only "Airport extreme", not "Airport". But for the big boxes that's no issue anyway, as there's support for Atheros based cards already which works quite nice. It's more important for the laptops and minis.

@Zylesea

I was not asking for support of the original Airport cards, just wondering if the driver they are working on MIGHT BE backwards compatible with those legacy wireless cards. They probably are two completely different animals, and therefore the driver will have nothing in common with the prior Airport products, but it never hurts to ask if they are similar or not.

I have no problem with the current state of wireless support provided, but I am thankful for the proposed Airport Extreme support in MorphOS3.6.

@Zylesea

MorphOS networking must have improved a lot lately. I used a recent build on a PowerBook and could not figure out where to setup a basic DHCP connection nor where to find network info. I gave up, not knowing if MorphOS had a problem or the router had a problem. I'm sure I got something configured but I couldn't tell one way or another. By comparison OS4 had the wizard and in the least Internet Prefs.

Getting official wireless support is certainly good and logical if your hardware has built in network support. I take it the network stack will also have support for wireless networks.

This is the point where OS4 falls behind. IPv4 code OS4 uses is already old. And it has no support for wifi in Roadshow. It only has third party support which adds software to the system. MorphOS moves ahead.

@Hypex

Don't doubt OS4. We don't know the exact details of what's coming in 4.2 Who knows, maybe better networking support (and WiFi?) support will come in 4.2 :)

Great job from the MOS Team though!

For future reference, wired and wireless networks are configured in the same place - RMB>Settings>System..>Network

Here's a step-by-step guide (no pictures yet)

It should be viewable in Odyssey, let me know if you have any problems and I'll look for a better place to host it.

Hmmn, I actually think it's in the most logical location, sys:prefs/network

But my Mini G4 didn't need any configuring, plugged in ethernet cable and it worked automatically.

@Boot_WB

Thanks for the guide. It works fine.

@danwood

I'm sure I would have found this. But something went wrong. The router was fine last I tested it so don't know why it didn't show up in the browser.

@Hypex

I am guessing that you are more used to AmigaOS4.x (or maybe even AmigaOS3.x), which is why you perhaps had trouble finding the network preferences for MorphOS, but what I don't understand is why many AmigaOS users are hesitant to ask for help when they encounter something they don't understand in using MorphOS?

I can't count the number of forum posts from Amiga users who report that they have given up on using MorphOS without ever asking for any help, or digging a little harder to find answers (which are usually very easy to find).

I think that the main English speaking MorphOS forum site is MorphZone.org, and there are plenty of helpful users there who are more than willing to answer questions from new MorphOS users.

Although MorphOS is very similar in how it works, when compared to AmigaOS, there are many changes, and it is it's own operating system, so naturally there are differences between it and any version of AmigaOS. Just ask for help when you need it, and you will surely get the answers, either here, as there are many MorphOS users on AmigaWorld.net, or over at MorphZone.org, if you can't get the answers you need here.

@amigadave

I am used to AmigaOSx.x. But I am aware of how MorphOS is MUI based and did find settings in the menu. As well as check all system programs I could see. Why I didn't ask for help is because I was testing it at my Amiga club half an hour before leaving and so didn't have the time to ask and wait for an answer in that time.

MorphOS can run Amiga software, but it is obvious it isn't exactly AmigaOS. Perhaps the API more closely resembles AmigaOS than the interface, but there are obvious differeces. Perhaps MorphOS needs a quick help item or gadget. Or a help key to remember.

This is great news. Lack of support for the internal Airport on the iBook G4 I'd be running MorphOS on is currently a deal breaker.

Indeed there are differences. The obvious differences are mostly to changes in Ambient comapared to workbench. Plus the many modernizations. The API - while massively extended and modernized - incorporates full AmigaOS 3.1 compabilty though.

http://library.morphzone.info/MorphOS_in_5_minutes gives a very brief overview.
