Been thinking about building a website completely non related to amiga, I know the basics of web design/code but may go a easy root and make it with wordpress or simular system, but before I begain I must admit to liking the layout of this site, recent forum post up top, last news below, I'm just wondering how this site was done and what code, plus if anyone has good recommendation of a book or web site to help please post, thanks.

@amigang

In WordPress this site would be replicated with a two column layout. The left hand column would be the sidebar with widget groups. The right the content column. Then you would have a header image and just below that the nav bar.

The thing with the modern Wordpress versions is that it is highly customisable and requires very little internal knowledge of the inner workings. What you can't do through themes you can do through the extensive plugin system. There are also free themes that can easily be customised too (http://themble.com/bones/). Just look for framework or bare bones themes.

As a non Web designer I found it easy enough to make a theme and get it working how I wanted.

What I would suggest is setting up a locally hosted install of wordpress and just playing with it. Once you are happy with how it looks and plays you can just replicate it on a Web hosting package.

But it all depends on what you want to accomplish. WordPress might not be the best and something like Joomla might be better.

@CritAnime

thanks for the reply, good suggestion about downloading it and playing with it offline, dont know why I didn't think of that. Joomla not bad, but I just feel there more support and resources out their for Wordpress. I was thinking of just using Tumblr as I have a min blog on their already but I dont feel it gives you that much control and now Yahoo own it I just waiting for it to become another GeoSite mess.

@amigang

Its made with a modified version of XOOPS 1.3. Wordpress is really good these days, but if you want to set up an online community type website with forums etc better to use something similar to XOOPS.
