Hello guys

I am writing this from my AmigaX1000 - model I got from Vox in exchange for Sam460 - we swapped for some time to play around with.

X1000 was at Vox's home for some time to install dual boot - AmigaOS4.1 update 6 and Linux.

I am asking a question now: what program I can use to test my Amiga - Speed, Processors Speed, Hard Disk's speed, Copy / Paste files speed, Memory speed... etc? What program to download and use and share here what I see?

I am not sure how Sam460ex performed, but as far as I remember - X1000 was at least twice as faster than Sam. But now [after a month or two of having no Amiga at home] - I start playing with X1000 and I notice that it works very very very slow.

It might be that at that time when I was using Sam I didn`t have SSD hard disk on my PC so I suppose that everything was working "normal" [slow] and in the mean time I get to use working with SSD and now everything seems very slow to me.

This is just my guessing, but I did some tests:

After I turned on X1000 and all loaded properly - I clicked on current beta of Timberwolf 4.0.1 and loading Timberwofl takes exactly 1 minute and 28 seconds [I measured on iPhone's StopWatch].

Opening GMail.com page takes around 50 seconds [to page appear] but to be able to move cursor and click on Login - takes additional 15 seconds.

Adding new tab [click +] in Timberwolf - takes between 5 and 8 seconds.

Loading this amigaworld.net web page takes 28 seconds [+ 15 sec more to make possible to click on LogIn and make possible to enter post here.]

To me it looks like lots of stuff is loading and loading in background until everything become normal and fast. For example - typing this text here is real-time but from time to time [lets say - each 10-15 seconds] something refreshes in background and my cursor stops displaying text... for 4-5 seconds and everything starts working normally. I keep typing but nothing is displayed, but then I can see everything I type - put in the screen all at once.

I think measuring speed with some program [some Sys-Info like] would be the best.

@djnick

Try GFXBench2D

It will test gfx and ram speeds

DiskSpeed

To test your harddrive speed

BogoMIPS

To test your cpu speed

@djnick

maybe it's not running at 1800 Mhz like it should, have you changed anything in CFE?

Don't bother with Timberwolf unless a newer and optimised version is released. Get the latest OWB instead.

@djnick

If you think it's software or configuration, try booting to the install CD.
things will take forever to load, but should run fine once loaded.
This is assuming you only run programs from the CD as well.

You might also try running
http://strohmayer.org/files/CPUTemp_52.15.lha
to see the processor load at any time.
Mine idles at 2% or less with no screensaver.

@NutsAboutAmiga
clock changes in CFE, (or lack of them) only affect the system
while CFE is loading. Once the OS takes over, it sets the clock correctly
no matter what CFE had set.

I just started Timberwolf on my X1000 - took 10 seconds. Loading AW.net took about 4 seconds.

My head might be temporarily empty but ... AOS4 does not come with any taskmanager by default?

Anyway, first I would try to see if there is some high priority process eating up all CPU.
Not tried, but there is:
http://www.os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=utility/workbench/taskview.lha

What other tools there is for monitoring tasks & CPU load per task/process?

UPDATE:
http://os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=utility/misc/scout.lha
http://os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=utility/misc/exorcist.lha

More?

Can you see if there is a lot of disk access? It sounds like something is blocking periodically in the background, like a dying disk trying to get through the day perhaps..?

But first check if there is unusual CPU usage as people suggested.

Thank you guys, I will test it later tonight. To me it seems like HD [2TB, bought with X1000] is slower, but I will say nothing more until I check everything.

Latest OWB works much faster [maybe 2-3 times faster than Mozilla] but I still think something is blocking working system correctly.

I had similar problem with my PC - something keeps blocking all resources from work, even with my latest strong configuration happens the same [when I boot from the second disk that is not SSD] - system is dead slow. I am sure it is something in software blocking system from work.

I will investigate later.

Thank you very much for your help! I will post here later.

TBH I think it's Timberwolf that is slow, not your X1000.

But if you think it's disk related, how full is the disk or the partitions on the disk?

Try adding more disk buffers to partitions with a lot of accesses.

eg.

addbuffers HD0: 1000

If you're going to do that, and you're using a newer RadeonHD card, you might need to burn the recovery ISO that Amigakit supplies on the hard-drive.

iirc the supplied OS4.1 install CD doesn't include drivers for the RadeonHD cards, so you could end up booting to a black screen if using such a card.

@all

Ok here it is a screengrab from Amiga.

http://www.deetronic.rs/!tests/screengrab-amiga.jpg

As you can see - I have a bunch of partitions on Amiga part and several are Swap, one for Amiga, one for Linux [as far as I know?] and I have dual-boot - Default is Amiga, Number 5 i Linux something. Linux acts a bit faster than Amiga, but instead smooth movement [50fps-like windows moving, cursor etc] - it looks like it works in 12 fps.

Anyway - take a look at screenshots. I've downloaded all programs you sent me, my HD0: [SYS:] is the only one visible drive and is ~700GB in size. HD is [as far as Vox told me 2TB] and there is 600 buffers on it.

Adding 2000 buffers for example to SYS: have no speed-up in work. Everything is dead-slow...

Also Vox paid 70 eur to Linux "Master" ;) to install the best possible version of Linux, even I don`t think I will have will to play with it. I've seen all programs - System is nice there but I am not that interested to play with Linux anyway. Maybe later in future, not now.

Off to bed. I suppose you can get some ideas from this screenshot...

@djnick

I see your X1000 is idling at about 20% processor load.
Mine is 0 to 2% with nothing happening, or 1 to 2% with Odyssey running.. so it's safe to say you've got something running that is eating up processor cycles

I can't tell what, but something (or a couple somethings) are loading your machine.

When I set up my X1000 I added a about dozen 10Gig partitions, each can be booted to as a separate workbench.
This makes it dead easy to keep one perfectly clean, another for testing programs, another for my day to day average use.. so in a case like yours I would start by booting to a clean install to check performance there. If everything is OK you can assume your problem is in software.

(This is very likely even without the test)
Your next step is to either start deleting things from the sick partition, or build up a fresh one from scratch.. Which way you go is a matter of preference.

Of course, if you're not set up with multiple boot partitions, this won't be very helpful at all.

Good Luck!

Have you tried with and without ethernet cable connected?
(I imagine it could be possible that something in your network could load your TCP/IP stack by sending carbage)

And try also with another mouse & keyboard etc if possible. (in case some carbage loads your USB stack)

Not read every word of this thread, but I believe you would have noticed if there's some continuous disk operations ongoing... (some app misbehaving with file access)

And for trying with clean system... 1) try to boot with AOS4 "live" CD (I do not remember if AOS4 install CDs work like that, though)
2) Get some cheap second SATA drive and try with clean install. (later you anyway can use the spare SATA drive as backup media)

@thread

How would x1000 behave if there is issues with CPU cooling? (does it simply shut down or slow down CPU Mhz)
How would x1000 behave if there is issues with GPU cooling? (does it simply malfunction or slow down)

Joke:
Someone has installed a "unlicenced MoprhOS" -simulator to your x1000.

@djnick

First, a 775G FFS partition is just wrong & slow, amigaboot.of only needs a 1MB FFS partition to boot the system. OS4 itself only needs a 500MB sfs partition. You need to make a large sfs\02 partition for any non-system apps (Work). As far as SWAP, it only works if you have 1GB of memory installed, if you have 2GB installed, SWAP won't work, os4.1 is limited to 2GB.

That HD needs to be re-done, easiest way is to add a second drive to partition & copy things over, no wonder it seems slow, it probably is.

Just to add, TW here starts in seconds if you read the docs & set the font cache up right. I would avoid it if Odyssey works for you.

Did you try running Snoopy to check if background processes are using the disks? I've often had to disable NMBD because it can go bonkers and slow everything down without telling anybody.
