Is this laserprinter ok for Amiga printing ?

I am in the market for a new color laserprinter. However ... I have linuxmint on my laptop, Windows8 RT on my wifes Surface, Windows7 on the desktop, Morphos on an Apple and a bunch of classic machines ... I would like to be able to use the printer for all of them.

I found this one for cheap locally:

HP laserjet pro 200 color M251N

Is Postscript 3 ( emulation ? ) and / or PCL enough to make it work ?

@Aminicle

For B/W printing it should work with Workbench PCL drivers at least. For colour printing you would need TurboPrint (ColorLaserJet5 driver).

The TurboPrint ColorLaserJet5 driver is most likely PCL5(c). It should work with that printer. You could ask on some HP forum, if this printer is compatible to the ColorLaserJet5 (the Color LJ5 is some kind of allround HP colour laser printer). If it is, there your are

AFAIK there is no PostScript Level3 driver for Amiga (yet), but that should make no difference at all, as PS Level3 is a superset of PS Level2. Only drawback is, AmigaOS PostScript drivers (I don´t mean the TurboPrint drivers here!) support B/W printing only atm.

I don´t know much about TurboPrint´s PostScript driver support, but I think there is none. AFAIK TP uses GhostScript for PostScript output.

GhostScript in turn should support PS Level2/3 colour printing, but AFAIK it also contains a PCL5(c) driver, so...

That printer works absoloutely fine.
I purchased it about 6 weeks ago, and have it setup as a network printer.

I have a PC (XP), my iMac, and my Amigaone printing to it via an ethernet switch.

On my Amiga I use Turboprint, which runs fine, and postscript printing from any program that supports it.

Usual caveat with the AmigaOS, you will only get colour printing when you print postscript.

Go for it.

there is no postscript support in turboprint. turboprint can only handle "dot matrixes" (how should i call it?).

if you send a postscript file to turboprint it is internally copied to ghostscript (that's why you need to conigure it in turboprint) and ghostscript is called by using the built-in turboprint driver. so ghostscript converts the ps file to a bitmap and sends it to turboprint which then jumps in and does the color magic.

of course, if you have .ps files you can try to copy it to the printer directly. some printers also accept .pdf files.

regards...

I don't think that's a correct term :) Turboprint supports dot matrix, inkjet and laser printers.

Yeah, I've had printers which support PS itself, so I haven't seen any need to configure ghostscript into Turboprint. I just print PS directly to printer whenever some program has PS output option.

For Amigaish systems I recommend that you don't take cheapest lasers and inkjets, which use proprietary Windows drivers. Better look for a printer which supports PS.

A quick test with the Postscript printer set to colour and the printtofile.device (not having a PS printer myself) verifies that the AmigaOS 4.1 PS printer driver certainly does do colour.

The opposite test to the above verifies that you can do B&W / Greyscale too.

Do none of you ever experiment with setings?

Who do you say that? What about using a colour PCL driver?

Is the Colour gadget broken?

For the Amiga side of things I would already be happy when I can print text. Manuals that I find for older shareware and as such. Amiguides maybe ?

I do have an original copy of Turboprint, not sure what one but I believe version 6 or 7. And Morhpos uses Turboprint also.

Using HP LJ M451nw with my Amiga X1000, working quite fine & colourfully through Postscript driver. Currently the printer is connected to the network and used both by Amiga and Win machine and wirelessly by IPad.

As I said, you will only get colour prints when you print using postscript, not "you can only print in colour using postscript."

Do you know any PCL5 colour driver for AmigaOS? I just know a PCL3GUI one...

But you´re right, I missed the colour gadget. I was stuck in OS3.x times, when the PS driver was b/w only...

Ah okay, sorry for the misunderstanding, your grammar is a touch ambiguous

I guess I'm lucky, I still have an HP895c hooked thru a IOBlix card. Perfect color photo quality 8.5x11 prints with TP.

I was thinking in the context of OS3. But of the top of my head, no.

My point was if a PCL driver can print to B&W, such as a HP Driver, why not just use a colour version of that driver? That's by knowing that all the HP PCL drivers are built from the same source with different features like DPI and colour. HP drivers in OS3 are the same in OS4 and use PCL3.

Did we have colour lasers back then? Given the OP is about classics it looks like this is to be taken into consideration. Good they updated something!
