@mcbone

It was the UK 101, came out a few years before the zx80. afaik.

It was omitted from your list, as was the Camputers LYNX ( Z80 based ) about the
same time as the Dragon 32.

The PET is the earliest machine (1977) among those you listed. There were home computers around before that, although AFAIK they were all kit machines (you had to build them yourself).

@mcbone

I'd say the Altair 8800, or maybe the Radio Shack TRS-80.

It depends of course a bit on what you mean by "entering people's homes".

The Altair was certainly in some people's homes, but those people were few and regarded as having a quite esoteric hobby.

The TRS-80 was probably a bit more common, but, IIRC, mostly used by people such as Radio HAMs, which again to the large masses were more or less geeks .

@mcbone

I'd have to say the TMS1802, cleverly disguised as a calculator.

@mcbone

Stupid question deserves a stupid answer:

A1: The first computer that could fit through the door.

A2: None, they've all been carried in by humans. You're thinking of robots.

A3: I've met a few of those but I wouldn't say that I know any of them.

@mcbone

In Finland it was CBM64 that made the big difference.
VIC20, CBM16, Atari and Sinclair was also present.

Well, here at my home a ZX-Spectrum+ (48K), but a friend he already had the ZX-Spectrum 16K (the one with rubber keys). Alas I had before a pong "console" with those wheel-button-sticks.

Nah the ZX80 and 81 predated the Spectrum by a good few years.

In the UK, the first off-the-shelf pre-built home computer was the ZX-80.
Before that you could get the UK-101 but you had to build it yourself (the maths teacher at my school had one).

This is hard to say as there isn't a clear cut answer. The problem is there was no first computer off the shelf all pre-built and ready to go from the box. They started off as kits as has been spoken off.

Perhaps it would be easier to ask what the first home computer was to enter people homes. Or the first micro computer as we called them in my days.

Oh the first to enter my home as a C16.

@mcbone

I am not calling you or anyone here stupid. The question itself is stupid, smart people ask stupid questions all the time. And so I provided a few answers to illustrate how stupid it is.

To continue to illustrate the futility of the question I will ask another question that is just as stupid:

Q: Who knows which was the first home to have a computer brought into it?

Since there are a bunch of vague attributes in the syntax, i.e. home, computer, brought into, no one can actually answer this question.

But we can certainly have some fun with it.

@agami

Good point with your question, although...

with that question alone you dont get very far yet, you didnt notice the question was plural - homes, therefore question at minimum is what were the first and second home that computer was brought into, and that only if they both bought the same computer. (computer as brand i suppose, not as the same exact computer, unless the original question was actually which home bought computer was the first computer to be resold to another home, hence computer-single- entering peoples homes-plural)

And this still as far as the idea is that the computer didnt enter itself into that home, but that someone brought it in is same as entering that home.

And then we get to the most vicious part of the question of "who KNOWS the computer", by which a lots of options can be meant with, opening even the question about what is meant by "who"?
