Just curious. As a ex Amiga user, but someone keen to see if it was possible to recapture some of the "good old days" it seemed like it had promise.

Should it be thrown on the pile of Amiga-related broken dreams?

@Aslak3

I think it's probably just taking longer than anticipated.

I think it's more like reaching a freeze point at which to release.

It's always tempting to add new things you know. Heh.

My understanding is, they're still developing.... they just haven't been making formal announcements of it every step of the way.

I think mostly just the beta testers know what the current state of things is.

Well Jason McMullen did say he was taking the same approach to multi core support as Hyperion were.

Hopefully it will be back up this week. Real life gets in the way from time to time.

@Aslak3

I signed up for beta and signed NDA im still waiting for a ISO to test no emails from developers and no sign of a ISO. I have now decided it is on the same pile as the Boxer, Walker and all the other pipe dreams that never have seen public release.

What's so special about it regards to the Amiga?

Troublesome question because it can be answered in terms of how it resembles a formerly accepted successor to what once was Amiga and/or from the owner/management side of the effort to make it officially such a successor.

Perhaps this response from Bernd Meyer to a question about dual kernel design will help.

That's a pretty accurate diagram of a typical Amithlon system.

I won't link to this, since mere mention of the website causes such angst in this community. heh.

A loaded question. Very well.

1. x86. Enough said on that.
2. It would support, in theory, all x86 hardware Linux kernel supports. No other attempt at an Amiga clone (OS4, MOS, AROS) has this.
3. AROS/OS3.1 source code compatability sounded like a given. Existing software wold need a rebuild to run on Arix but that is all.
4. The boundary of where the Linux kernel ended and "Amiga" began semed about right to me. Linux block devices with Amiga filesystems, etc. From a technical PoV it seemed like a lot of good choices to me. Amiga with a disk cache; who'd have thought it possible.

Arix sounded cool. and had something missing from all other clones, namely pragmatism. Oh well.

That sounds a lot like hosted AROS... what's the difference between the two?

@CodeSmith

Hosted runs on top of a kernel, as I understood it Arix is based on a new kernel that is a hybrid of a Aros and a Linux kernel using the Linux parts f.e. for driver support.

It is? (Goes and checks) Yup, it is! :D :D

As for what someone else here said... I wasn't aware Arix was going to require recompiles of AROS executables. Is there somewhere that it says that?

just encase anyone isnt aware they do have a twitter and facebook feed
https://twitter.com/Arix_OS
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Arix-OS/414578091930728

last update was in june, showing a screenshot demoing that it can detect multi core cpu. Far as I'm aware it just another type of Aros, like icaros, Aros Broadwell is, so if your interested in aros I suggest you just play with these OS until Arix comes out, if ever.
