A loaded question. Very well. |
I thought it was a short one. Well you did say "good old days" so this is what I was referring too.
1. I'm slightly lost here as I don't consider PC hardware to be like the "good old days" and it just remends me how Windows won.
2. They do have Linux based drivers but not any direct driver support. And even having all of of source hasn't incresed the driver count by much.
3. Sounds about right. Except on OS4 where it seems to need a complete rebuild with extras.
4. It's also funny as at the start people were convinced OS4 sat on top of a Linux kernel. But, the Amiga had a disk cache; dir cache builr in, data cache with a patch. Or another filesystem with built in cache. But none of the current Amuiga filesystems are up to scratch on modern hardware. |

Should it be thrown on the pile of Amiga-related broken nightmares? |

Last post on facebook & twitter is fromdecember 2014 / January 2015.
But, yes, very silent. Arix had interesting stuff like multiprocessing.
Perhaps/hopefully the little/huge resources are put where it matters, to OS development.
Any idea anyone if there will be new news coming anytime soon, related to Arix? Is the development ongoing somewhere? _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |

If the target was abandoning incomplete OS and obsolete Amiga Exec Kernel I'd rather prefererred it was used BeOS/Haiku microkernel design, closed to original Amiga idea and with elegant design too, rather than fatty Linux design one...

I think that like many things in the Amiga scene, it's just taking a lot longer than anticipated. |

Arix is simply AROS-hosted on top of a Linux kernel but with nearly all the Linux components stripped off such as the package manager, Gnome/KDE desktop, etc.....Nothing to get excited about since you can download and install several hosted versions of AROS. |

YALD was my biggest criticism of Arix. The Arix fanboys tried to pass Arix off as some sort of new OS that had dual kernels, or a hybrid kernel, which was ludicrous. Thankfully, Michal Schulz, the main AROS developer confirmed that Arix is just another Linux-hosted version of AROS, but not before the fan-boys had spread all sorts of misinformation and stirred up a lot of controversy.
Linux-hosted AROS is great for AROS developers who need a fast, stable dev environment, but as an end-user, the concept of Yet Another Linux Distro was a real turn-off for me. I would honestly rather use Haiku than Linux again. Linux is a mess with its various package managers and competing desktops and don't even get me started on their GPU support. Simply trying to install the latest proprietary video drivers in Linux will wreck your system. And converting from Nouveau to nVidia drivers is also an exercise in frustration with having to blacklist certain components, etc, etc...... |

If it is simple another "Linux hosted" what are they needing so long? Perhaps you should have told it to them then they would be ready already |

Nobody "needed" it. That's why it has essentially died. That and there are already too many Linux-hosted versions of AROS. There are at least 3 that I know of. If you like Arix, then by all means, try to find a copy and use it. Better yet, I can send you a link to download a copy if you're really interested, but be warned, it's very buggy. You have tested it?
I am not involved in Arix but Aros so I cannot say anything about its state.
Buggy means what? Software not working on it? Crashing? |

Yes, I have tested it. It didn't like my trackpad on my test laptop which is a Dell Inspiron E1705 with nVidia 7900GS. The trackpad just wouldn't work so I had to use a USB mouse instead. Wanderer also has a bad habit of just failing for no apparent reason. Sound was also not working properly. Boot times are blistering fast. Less than 11 seconds from powering on to hitting the desktop.
You'll honestly have a much better experience using Ares or IcarosDesktop hosted as the driver support is much better.....and they all have a Linux kernel under the hood anyway. |
