This is a SOS. My Work partition seems to be gone as it shows as DH1:Uninitialized.

I was using an external CFcard with an old back up of my Work partition that I had named as Work_New2. After powering my computer off for the day and removing the CF card the following day before powering it on again, the computer is now asking for the Assign of the Work partition, but it's not listed under any of the volumes. I can only finish booting when I point or Assign to the CFcard.

After booting up it says "Please Insert volume Work in any Drive" WorkbencHh84, or something like this.

What happened? How can I fix this?

Thank you in advance for any help.

@WeiXing3D

It sounds as though something bad has happened to your Work: partition. What filessytem is it using?

You may find it's easier to simply Format it, copy everything from the backup and start again.

@tonyw

I'm far from being an expert. I can't say which filesystem was using. I don't even know how to reformat or initiliaze that partition....?

Could someone please guide me how to fix this mess?

It's basic workbench 101... it's in the manual

select the hard drive icon...
go up to the menu... select format...follow the prompts...

remember, all data will be wiped in a format!

If all else fails...

Bring it to AmiWest 2014 Classic Clinic.... we'll show you how.

@WeiXing3D

Do not reformat the first thing you do.

Go into System/Media Toolbox and see if it wants to do something with your disk. Sometimes it can detect a change in drive configuration. Saving this config can get a partition back. If Media Toolbox does not say anything you can at least look at the partition configuration by selecting the drive and click "Edit partitions and file systems". You can also see the file system here in the list.

Also note if any other partitions have been renamed (I've seen this occasionally with JXFS or SFS2).

@SACC-dude

I'm still not sure if I'm going to be able to make it to AmiWest this year, due to busy work related travel schedule. But I'm still trying to move some dates.

In case I can't definitely go, is there a way that I could ship it to someone in Sacramento or in the bay area for this person to please help me to fix this problem? I will pay for freight both ways, of course.

@Deniil715

You are 100 persent (sic) correct.

I was trying to help with the posting which said "I don't know how to do that"

Not the greater issue of data loss... I did note "data will be lost!"

I'm guessing now, was this issue on the sam machine (os4?) in the sig

The OP wasn't clear.

Like I say, I will try my best to come to AmiWest. What I am asking is if you could check with the rest of SACC members to see if someone could help me between now and AmiWest. I will pay for freight charges.

This is the kind of stuff that the classic program Diskdoctor should fix but never did. Could Quarterback tools help?

No its dangerous, does not support large drives and partitions, nor does it support modern filesystems, more then likely he might end up with even more corrupted HD, possibly destroying other partitions as well.

Moral of the story is take backups, before you get data corruption, burn a backup on a DVD, or copy your most important data to different HD, incase of HD failure.

PartitionWizard can be used to recover files, but most people can't get that program to run.

@NutsAboutAmiga

That's right! Quarterback Tools is outdated and dangerous for new filesystems.

It will be interesting starting a bounty to hire programmers for a new set of recovery and backup utilities tyat are universal for any amiga filesystem

OK, now I made it a bigger issue, since I messed up with the booting order and the system would not boot.

I was playing with the settings in System>Tools> Mediatools and and I clicked saved after testing (changing) the booting order.

I'm not sure what to do after pressing Escape to access the system boot settings.

On perhaps a better note, before I messed up, I notice that both my partitions, System and Work wre listed there.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

@WeiXing3D

Boot from your CD, run Media Toolbox and change the boot order (boot priorities) back the way they were, or at least so that your boot volume (Workbench or whatever) has the highest boot priority.

Save the changes, remove the CD and reboot.

Best regards,

Niels

I tried that but it doesn't go to the DVD unit. Do I need to press any keys to force it to read/star from the DVD?

Will the unit boot from the emergency SD card plugged into the SD card slot on the motherboard? (That would require removing the unit's cover and plugging the SD card directly into the slot on the MB - with the power OFF)

@Amiga4000

I found the emergency card in the box that came with the OS. I will try that tonight.

Thank you.

@WeiXing3D

Did we ever sort out what filesystem the partition has? It ought to be SFS, right? FFS would be farily easy to fix but SFS is more difficult. There are some tools to download from here. You might want to test them.

edit: typos x3

Oscar, the file system is/was SFS\02 on DH1.

Trust me... I know.
