The next version of WinUAE is going to have a PPC emulator. I wonder what this means for OS4.

@thinkchip

There's a few threads about it and some people have already been running tests and posting a few videos of OS4.1 running under UAE.

At the moment it is slow compared to real PPC hardware except maybe PowerUP hardware if you have a fast i7. It's extra sales potential but it will always be a lesser experience compared to real hardware because some features will not work under emulation.

I hope Hyperion recognise that it won't threaten sales of dedicated hardware and exploit the opportunity to increase the OS4 userbase and make some extra revenue.

AmigaOS 4.1 Classic works really good in Beta 18. However, only 128 MB Fast RAM (+ SWAP) and 4 MB GFX RAM are supported.

MPlayer benchmark is faster on Core-i5-2500K (WinUAE/PPC) than on 440EP 800 MHz. Sure, FPU emulation is slow.

With support for Z3 RAM and more GFX RAM, it would be nice low-cost entry to OS4 world.

That is really impressive result, considering it was only started a few weeks ago.
If x64 version is ever released and FPU gets JITed, we could be looking at performance of above the current SAM460, maybe even close to G4/PA6T speeds on latest HW.
If MorphOS and/or AOS4 could be made to run under QEMU on x64, you would not need any PPC HW, heck, it questions the need for a native x86/x64 port for most tasks.

Not with QEMU CPU core.

From: Somewhere in the Dutch mountains....

Just found a complete i5 system for about 600 euro

So that could be a serieus contender for PPC systems, given that a few more isues are worked out.

Ofcourse OS4 needs to be purchased aswel....

Anyone knows if M.A.C.E works on Emulated PPC? (if so, how is performance?)

Can you run Qemu without a host OS directly on hardware ?

@Tomppeli
No. But you can put a minimal linux in a large enough bios rom (coreboot plus payload)
I planned that feature for the aresone's in the past but uefi came and coreboot didn't cope with speed of hardware replacement. I have a rom made for a 2009er msi board am2.

We tried it but it only bringst a black screen. Currently UAE PPC only uses a virtual Picasso4 gfx card with 4mb memory. This is not much and not enough to store all graphics.

As we use in our games the compositing engine of AmigaOS which uses acceleration from graphics card (Radeon) there is currently no way to play the game with good performance. AmigaOS tries to make compositing in software mode, which is slow.

We tried also our other games. Tap Jewels works playable, A frog game too but with some missing graphics because of the low gfx memory. But it runs better than expected...

Maybe if someday a virtual use graphics card is available, the games runs better.

As now, the UAE solution could give some people an entry for AmigaOS without purchasing hardware... and maybe later if they want more fun, they will buy a sam od x1000 and have fun with mace ;)

Yes, you need the OS4.1 for Classic, (not the other versions)
