Anyone know what cpu should I look for when I want to get a PC (or laptop) for use with UAE adn OS4?

Is an I3 enough ? Is one core enough ? Is the only thing important the clock speed ?

Thanks

Martin

Faster single core performance is always better.

There are still one core CPUs in desktop/laptop market?

Speed of PowerPC emulation on Core i5-2500 3.3 GHz is comparable with cca 475 MHz (OGR-NG) to 950 MHz (MPlayer) 440EP.
Note, there are severe limitations:
128 MB RAM (CyberstormPPC emulation, Blizzard603e supports 256 MB, but emulation is slow in current beta)
4 MB GFX RAM
no Compositing
no 3D

@pavlor

maybe I should try it first on my core duo 1.87 ghz

If it works well, for my purposes (I dont need 3D for example) I plan on getting a cheap x86 laptop, so I might have an OS4 laptop :)

@Metalheart

You'll want a fast Intel i7 if you want decent speed.

Yes, but I need to keep the pricetag in mind though....

WinUAE (with PPC) needs at least a dual core cpu. QEMU PPC emulation task runs in another thread, so you'll get severe speed penalty with a single core cpu.

@Metalheart

It likely will, but it will probably be very slow. Anyway, no harm in trying it.

It'll work, but don't expect miracles...

I have tried it on my old Core2Duo T9600@2.8GHz laptop and it's not that bad...

@Pecosbil

How does the OS feel in comparison to a SAM or CS-PPC ?

Epsilon is doing Amiga OS 4.1 Classic Emulation presentation on AmiWest right now.

Looks reasonably fast.

@Metalheart

Would be intresting to see if Amiga Vendors have noticed a spike in OS4.1 sales since PPC emulation surfaced.
Getting some estimates/numbers from Amigakit would be intresting ^^

The secondary effect I think will help Amigakit/AEON and Hyperion is that there will be more people signing up for AmiStore. Yes, still small numbers, but it all adds up.

I wonder if there will be a PPC plugin for E-uae ?

So we can run OS4 under emulation on SAM's and X1000's

I think there WILL be extra sales.
There might be quite alot of them when more bugs are ironed out and JIT is done, and more memory available for emulation

Theres is JIT (QEMU CPU core). Memory (GFX and RAM) is worst limitation.

@Metalheart

Yes, when they switched to QEMU instead of PearPC for PPC, they got the JIT emulation. It was a good boost in speed.

A better boost in speed was when Toni indicated we should use the HDF file on the emulated Accelerator SCSI virtual connection instead of the emulated IDE connection.

Also, there were a few changes to the QEMU part that increased the JIT cache side that resulted in great speedups.

I'm using it on both a laptop with i7 and a desktop with an AMD FX-8350. The desktop is much faster.

OS4.1 Final will finally let us use more than the 128GB we are limited to now. I can't wait!
