Did Amiga have the first "iPhone" before it was even a twinkle in Steve's eye? Now I've got your atttention, it looks like it did. By accident I came across an archive for an Amiga program called AmiPhone last released by the author in 1996. This certainly predates the Apple "version" that came out in 2007. AmiPhone is a program that lets you make vocal "phone" calls to another Amiga over the internet. It employs a VOIP before even VOIP was a catch word. Amiga: An old innovator.

Check it out:
http://aminet.net/search.php?query=amiphone

As you can see, the Amiga version of the iPhone is inside AmiPhone. Well, I thought it was a cool find.

By comparison. I have also seen iBrowse on both iOS and Windows.

@Hypex

I used to use AmiPhone quite a lot to talk to a state side Amigan who went by the name of Cyber2th, wonder what happened to him...

@Ryu

Cool stuff. How did it compare a telephone call in terms of audio quality.

Hum. Not iPhone: I'll compare it with Skype, instead.

@Rob

I was on dialup back in the day and the audio quality wasn't too bad. Not quite as good as a normal phone call but perfectly usable. I used my megalo sound sampler and microphone.

@Ryu

Did anyone tried it now to see if it works? I see that the version 1.93 can use AHI for input, so it might work on NG systems?

In fact, Amiga got an 'iphone' like, before Iphone gone gold (2007 right?).

At that time, there was a Sharp smartphone, coming along with AAnywhere.

That was a working proto....before iphone....

Funny nick, it would stand out. Perhaps he changed it and will reappear on the forums.

I also wonder what similar software other computers had. It's not an easy thing to do, as you would have needed a compatible sampler hooked up to the mic I take it, all hooked up and working.

@cdimauro

Well AFAIK there was no AmiSkype back then or even now . And "AmiPhone" contains the string "iPhone".

@all
Tried the app on my AmigaOS 4 system and it show an error message asking the misc.resource, which is not available. Does anyone know what it is and where I can find it?

On a classic. It controls access to the serial port.

Iphone name isn't property of apple because it is licensed from cisco. They pay a hefty sum to be able to use it.

That is correct. I have a wireless Linksys IPhone which can be used for landline calls and skype calls in one.

When I tried to buy a second one I can't, because it disappeared from the shelves and a little bit later apple iphone is released.
