Someone kept blowing fuses at work last week so my answer to your question would unfortunately be "too often for comfort, lately"

And I was setting up that machine with linux for the first time last week, so "at least often enough that the horrible BIOS annoyed me a lot" could be a plausible response.

@lylehaze

Neat modding ideas there. Having a user-controllable led sure is a good idea, and don't even get me started on the power vs reset button thing of modern computers.

Oh... at the work we dont use desktop computers anymore. Only laptops with docking stations. It is always "on".

Well, we need as much CPU power as possible and noone is willing to pay for that in laptops

honestly how often you reboot your computer? Once in a month maybe?

My Macbook gets switched off most nights and back on again in the morning. That said, it has an SSD which speeds things up a bit.

Btw, roughly the worst thing you can do to a laptop battery is to keep it plugged in while the laptop is in a docking station. The system runs hot and the battery gets less cooling. Li-Ion handles heat very badly. Mine is down to 912mAh (from 8400) and that's mostly just sitting in the laptop while either turned off or in docking station.

I know. I consumed the original batter in less than year. But since new batteries cost nothing to me so it is not an issue at all.

@amigakit

I'm still curious as to what the X3500 is.

Was it an earlier name for the A1222, or is it a distinct machine that will follow on later?

It was to be same board as the X5000 but with a P3041. It was supposed to be a lower cost model but the price difference didn't make sense in the end so the idea was scrapped.

Today is the last official day to order an Amiga 3500 and OS 4,2 for our company.

Time has been given, anyone?

Maybe The X3500 should have been renamed A1222

You mean that something will actually follow later? Based on what PPC CPU?

The X1000 of 2012 was 2005 level technology that got its a$$ kicked by 2004 G4 *laptops*.

The X5000 was hardly a move forward in performance, more of a sideways move compared to X1000.

The upcoming A1222 will be a huge leap *backwards*, so it’s usually benchmarked against Sam 460’s that basically has a 1999 PPC 440 core coupled with some aging connectivity controllers on chip.

So if anything ”new” would be announced today (available in 2021/2022 if previous patterns were to be followed), what would it be? What PPC chip would be used? What specifications would that 2022 computer have? What price?

Old news since 1994...

"Reason" and "logic" aren´t good choices for the world of Amiga. Just look how "successful" is MorphOS on cheap and powerful hardware.

@Rob

A single motherboard designed exclusively for P3041/P5010/P5020 would have made far better sense in an Amiga context than a single motherboard designed for P5040 thus having negative impact on PCI-E when a P5020 is used (which will be the choice for some 99% of all Amigans). Especially so since it’s rather questionable at this point whether the X5040 will be publicly sold at all...

Yes, the MorphOS move to support Mainstream Mac H/W was really fortunate indeed. For a decade (or: a time period as long as the original Commodore Amiga’s entire life span), MorphOS users has been able to benefit from the finest the PPC ever had to offer, at affordable hobby-price tags. Tiny, compact Mac Mini’s, several versions of real laptops, big box G4 and G5 hardware that no OS4 H/W ever came close to match, despite price tags of €3,000+ that drove people away in masses. This while OS4 users only kept waiting, dreaming and talking about their waiting and dreaming in forums. And in 2011 the MorphOS Team announced a future move to 64-bit and a new ISA. So yes, I think they have been very successfull.

Maybe you should stop drinking tonight... from outside the Amiga bubble MorphOS looks even more dead than OS4.

I disagree. I have one the last G4 laptops and it's big. It's got a single core 1.67Ghz CPU and at 32-bit. If I try and use Facebook messenger I can type messages in about one character a second.

My X1000 has a dual core 64-bit 1.8Ghz CPU. Even running on OS4 in 32-bit single mode with a cruddy browser Facebook messenger is at least useable. So no my X1000 doesn't get its ass kicked.
