| I am running this poll here to gauge how many members here would be interested in buying an updated "Amiga Guru" book by Ralph Babel. The online petition from a few years ago, to find out how many people would support the writing of such a book has disappeared, as the petition site is now closed down. _________________ Amiga! If you mean the same book that was about to be released a few years back, but due to the leaked torrent story, everything was canceled, then yes, I will buy it. _________________

| @marko It's the most complete documentation and explanation of how the Amiga disk operating system works. It's essential documentation for Amiga programmers. My original copy is falling apart so I'd like a new copy; especially if it's updated to cover OS4, MOS etc. Due to pirating of the last attempt to republish it, it's doubtful we will see new publication.

| Being old schools, I voted yes for a hard backed book in English.

| If it's as thorough as the old one, but updated for 4.1 Final and the price is about $50, I probably buy it. |

| What sort of price would a dead-tree edition of the book likely be?

| TBH given that there is already a more or less comprehensive documentation of all the important DOS packets and the new vector port interface in the latest SDK I don't see much need for the Amiga Guru book any more as it will likely contain mostly out of date information.
Having said that, I'd still probably still buy it though if it was available and not too expensive... Last edited by salass00 on 04-Dec-2014 at 03:04 PM.

| I'm sitting here beside my copy of the book, in English, published in 1993, priced DM 79. It MASSIVELY covers the nitty-gritty of AmigaDOS (up to 2.something), DOS functions, handlers, packets, CLI, etc. It has very considerable info on programming (Aztec and SAS/C (not sure where Amiga GCC was in 1993), how compilers and assemblers interface with the system, program startup stuff), system internals (system bootup arcana etc.).
Next to nothing on Intuition and user interface, but you can find plenty on those elsewhere.
Mr. Babel bills it as a reference manual, but you will find very few reference manuals as well, interestingly and wittily written as this. The chapter epigraphs are funny and well-chosen, and the footnotes can be outrageous. It contains a vast amount of dry technical information, but the way it is handled makes it in my mind some kind of weird philosophical treatise---like if Marcus Aurelius had been coding C instead of fighting the Germans The organization, the type, the clean design; it's just a gorgeous thing from the guru meditation on the cover to page 736 "This page left intentionally blank---well almost."
Sorry for gushing, but IMHO this is one of the great pieces of Amiga information, literature and history, updated or not. Buy it if you can. |
