A-EON Technology is pleased to announce that it has purchased the AmigaOS source code and development rights for Aladdin4D from DiscreetFX. As part of the agreement A-EON will exclusively own the Aladdin4D 68K and PPC source code, domain name, brand and rights for all AmigaOS and related versions including emulation and future MorphOS and AROS ports. Meanwhile DiscreetFX will retain the rights for non-Amiga relatd operating systems....

wow. so, that was unexpected.

@eliyahu

It seems to follow the trend where AeonKit seems determined to cover what people would consider the bare minimums from a "modern" OS;

-Officepackage (Libre/Openoffice)
-Music (Octamed)
-Graphics/Studiowork (Sketchblock, Blender, Personal Paint and for 3d modeling; Aladdin4d)
-Steamlike applet to centralize sales, updates and distrobution.

All of this has been covered to a certain extent by relativly old software in the past, but for serious use in the future; programs needs to be updated.

All in all a very welcome aquisition. Only hope the hardware drivers, that directly affects the performance of a wide range of programs, will be developed futher. Hans obviously busy with this Radeon project
Additionally Im quite pleased that AmiDark got his bounty fullfilled, which lowers the entry level for creating advanced demo and games.

2015 seems to be a year that presents updated options for the creativly inclined.

I do wonder if they have enough developers lined up to undertake the massive work to update their aqusitions. I get the impression that Andy and Matthew is already working 30 hours a day

The most important thing is a full featured web browser with things like flash, java. The others are actually extras while this is something essential. I guess when Microsoft integrated Explorer into Windows, they had this in mind.

I mean not everyone have to use Office programs and not everyone has to use graphics programs.

Has there been any more information about this apart from the Amiwest announcement?

@Ancalimon

I completely agree, tho the AOS browser version is/was Kas1e, plus Timberwolf seems to be on hold while 4.1FE and 4.2 is being developed.
I belive Ssolie commented that other browsers should be depended upon for the time being.

Chris is activly developing Netsurf tho and frequenting this forum, so there are things happening on that front too, albeit slowly.

But I agree, the current Windows flavours of browsers today are incredible powerful, making games and programs virtually platform independent.

@Robert

Ive not seen any updates regarding Octamed, which is why I asked wether or not AeonKit got enough developers lined up to keep up with the acqusition pace

i guess i'm in the minority, but honestly, other than support for adobe flash -- which will never happen on our platform -- i'm very happy with odyssey, both on AOS4 and on MOS. it does everything i need it to, and then some. the only thing i'd like to see is improved stability for the AOS4 port and the source opened.

Errr... As long as you're using windows as a platform...

@Severin

I guess the point was; many features/programs/needs that used to be covered by standalone local programs on your harddrive, is now being absorbed into browers.
Even fullyfledged 3d games like Quake Arena for example is running flawlessly thru browser (tho you do download quite a few megs to run it).

I personally dont like the whole "Cloud" idea. I want my stuff stored locally where I have some control over it. But I can see why some would like to see Amiga platform browsers reach as close to the "modern" performance as possible.

Really no. Not that more advanced browsers are not useful, but if all you want out of a computer is windows style browser compatabilty, you have to use windows. Flash wil never happen, Windows style java is unlikely. In the mean time we do have good HTML media support thansk to fab and kas1e efforts on odyssey. I still use my linux laptop for you tube etc though, I have more interesting things to do with my amigas...

Even more strongly no. "the others" and creative apps in general, are what amiga has always been for (unless you were on ever an a500 games player).

Hehe. YES you did, and I did wonder IF you would flog me over it.

My point about AeonKit trying to cover as much of the "minimum standard for OSs" still stands
SketchBlock and Blender (by you) covers a few areas nicely, while the AEONKit projects seems to cover several others.

Just my lazy posting.

@broadblues

There is no such a thing as "Windows style browser" or "Windows style Java". They are universal standards. If you want to be able make use of the Internet, you need a browser that supports common standards.

Why can't flash player support happen? There is basic flash support inside IBrowse.

We are no longer living in the 90s. Even back before 2000, I was actively using my Amiga on the Internet and it was much better back then :)

AmigaOS should have an integrated browser which makes it possible to use the web properly. That should be the most important goal. Even more important than fixing non-serious bugs of OS4 or adding new new features such as dualcore support.

@Ancalimon

Basically it seems to me like it is better to focus on something else than flash support at this point, since seems like HTML5 is replacing Flash quite nicely.

For example youtube nowadays works with HTML5 as well, and seems to me like many others too. I am not sure if there is anything anymore where i would need Flash, except for flash games. Seems like everything else has HTML5 alternative.

Hence using time for flash now, might be bit of a waste of time. However, I might be wrong, since using windows browser for browsing, you dont most of time see if it is flash, html5 or what that is needed, as they work seamless.

@Ancalimon

Forget flash, even linux have not a open source alternative that works 100%, only the official adobe port for linux works (obviously). And flash as has been mentioned is being reemplaced with html5 functions

On the other hand, java is more plausible and a must have. it will open a lot of apllications and web apps for AmigaOS
