Who becomes Amiga guru?

In this new game the player takes part in the fictitious tv game show "Who becomes Amiga guru?". There he has to prove his knowledge about Amiga, Morph OS and AROS.

He gets help by different lifelines:

If the player manages to achieve a score of 1,000,000 then he deserves the prestigious (?) title "Amiga guru".
But be careful! Do not let the rude presenter insult you!

If the OS3 versions does not start correctly, then more memory has to be freed. The game should work with every resolution, it scales automatically. But the best result should bring a full hd resolution (1920x1080).

Nice video

Are there also questions you don't know the answer to?

@Severin

Could you please check the following things for me?
- Did you use the the latest version of the game?
(this is version 1.1, which I uploaded on 2015-01-01 to Aminet.
Link: http://aminet.net/game/misc/WhoBecomesAmigaGuru_OS4.lha )
Unfortunately, there is still an older version of the game on Aminet, too (with a
different archive name). That one had some issues.
- Did you extract all files of the lha archive to the same place?
The files "WhoBecomesAmigaGuru_OS4", "resources.000", "resources.001",
"avcodec.hwp" and "jpeg2000.hwp" need to be in the same directory.

If this doesn't help, then please answer the following questions for me:
- On which OS did you use the game? According to your forum signature I guess it
was the version for OS4?
- Which hardware did you use?
- At which point of the game do you get this error message?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Hmmn none of the download links seem to work for me, just get timed out.

EDIT: Never mind, managed to get it via FTP . Seems Aminet is having issues again

@A500Fan

So I downloaded and played the games a few times. By the end it was fun.

I do have a few comments. I found it to be a bit slow, namely due to HW I take it. I don't know what it is doing as it is meant to be a Scala for the modern era AFAICT and I can't see it doing anims in realtime.

I expected some fedback from the gadgets but nothing happens and then a second later the screen changes. Is HW trying to be the next BackBone?

When I saw the host I also expected to see her speaking and then hear some speaking. But this did not happen. Perhaps your art was too good looking?

The questions need some work as they weren't fully understandable and sometimes looked as if words were missing or they they were translated to English. Slightly.

I liked the idea of "three chances" or help lines,. But felt it was unfair how I am only given one life and how the game ends as soon as you give a wrong answer.

I tried the OS3 version on my 040 A4000 and the screen was just black for like 5 minutes, then some audio came in really slow and time stretched and the whole system was unresponsive, so I'm guessing this is PPC or emulation only.

I've just tried it on MorphOS on my G5 and it runs smoothly and nice and fast.

I take they don't have "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" downunder or or you haven't had the pleasure of watching it.

I found the questions a fraction easy with only the Million question being at all tricky, and that was trivial after taking the 50/50 option.

The game stores the background screens in full hd. If the player uses a different resolution then the game scales all graphics and does anti aliasing in real time. This might eat up a lot of computing time on classic hardware. Decoding the mp3 compressed background music could also be too demanding for slower CPUs.
Maybe someday I'll do an additional low-end version in C or Blitz Basic.

This is really a disadvantage. I translated the game myself from my mother tongue to English. But my English isn't good enough. If someone is reading this who is bilingual in both English and German: Please drop me an email (A500Fan at gmx dot de) and assist in improving the translation.

I had the following results after testing the speed of the game on different platforms:
- Morph OS on a Mac Mini G4: Very fast
- AROS (virtualized within Virtualbox): Very fast
- OS 3.9 (emulated within WinUAE): Ok
- OS 4 classic (emulated within WinUAE): Slow Intro, too little memory for the
main game

- AROS (emulated within qemu): Horribly slow

I wasn't able to test it on real OS4 hardware myself, but people reported it to be fast enough.

Yes I used the latest version, downloaded on 02-01-2015

Yes all files are extracted to ram: and all are there.

I used the game on OS4.1 FE on an X1000.

The error pops up when do any of the following:
Run the game, go to options, turn background music off, return to main menu and click start new game.
Run the game and click start new game
Run the game and click exit.

@Severin:
Thank you for the information.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to reproduce this error yet.
I don't own a X1000, so that I additionaly contacted a user who was got a similar configuration like you (AmigaOne X1000 with OS4.1) and asked him if he sees a similar behaviour. In a first test he extracted the game to his harddisk, in a second test run he saved it in RAM: only. Both times he played the game for several minutes, but didn't get an error message.
For this reason I currently don't know why the game doesn't run on your computer. If I get an idea I'll write you.

@A500Fan

Tried extracting to hard drive but no difference. I'm using onboard audio if that makes a difference.

Now I also compiled versions for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux(386).

They can be downloaded via the gamejolt - portal:
http://gamejolt.com/games/other/who-becomes-amiga-guru/64769/

All three versions have been tested on their target os. They run "out of the box", all necessary plugins are included.

As soon as there will be ARM/Linux-versions of the "AVCodec"- and "JPEG2000" Hollywood plugins, I'll add a Raspberry Pi version, too.

Following the live stream of Amiwest I discovered the presentation about new Amiga games of the last year. I was very glad that my game "Who becomes Amiga Guru?" was shown there, too.
But there was a little misinformation given, stating that the game was all in German.

This applies to version 1.0 only. The current version is in English, too. In the settings menu you can switch between English and German.
I just wanted to clarify that

@A500Fan

I feel that if you have to help him get the game running, he doesn't deserve to win the title "Amiga Guru" anyway
