| I have just got my self a Amiga 1200, but I like to find a hardrive to use.
But this uses 2.4" IDE drive so can I use any ide hd from a lap top or is there a special kind of IDE drive I must use. ?
Also if I get a IDe drive that is bigger then 4Gb..... lets say i have a 40gb can that be used on my 1200 with AOS 3.1 ? |

Yes.

With plain 3.1, only 4 GB will be useable, I think. There are additional patches allowing to use bigger drives even on 3.1. As I never used these (my HDD has 500 MB ), my experience is limited. |

| @pavlor Yes, plain 3.1 filesystem restricts to 4 GB, device driver to 8 GB.

There's no hard drive size restrictions, even for 3.0, let alone anything newer. You will however need to update your filesystem to something other than ffs to go beyond 4gig, and additionally update SCSI.device to go beyond 8gig. Additionally your boot partition(s) need to be inside 1st 2gig of the drive |

I can't recall, the 1st pin on the connector isn't required (its a motor down/reset line), and is often slipped if the HDD can't spin up and seek quick enough for the OS.
EDIT: Sorry just saw the image, no those pins look like master/slave jumper points and are not to do with the connector.
If you don't have an IDE laptop hard drive already, you might want to consider a CF to IDE adaptor as these are silent and consume less power. Same goes for a disk on module.
Some links to what I am talking about : CF to IDE with CF card
This is a particuarly good solution, as it can go stright on an A600/A1200 motherboard with no cable: Disk on Module
With these solid state devices, always remember to set the MaxTransfer rate to 0x1fe00 in HDToolbox when creating the partitions. If not some random behavior can occur when copying files etc.Last edited by A1200 on 24-Feb-2015 at 06:55 PM.

| I agree those pins look like Master/Slave jumpers.
We also have CF IDE backplate. Maybe useful if use is swapping CF frequently between WINUAE and A1200 without having to open up computer every time. You can still use most makes of 44pin drives inside your A1200.

Can I both have the IDE hd installed at the same time as I have the CF backplate (so I can swap cards). ?
Do you have a order number for that. ? |

I would use the CF card...heck with mechanical bits :) Plus, you have more options to move files back and forth from amiga to pc. _________________ -- -- aka Tony Rocks |

| I have a CF card installed in my Amiga 1200 and also one attached to my PCMCIA port which was used to transfer files between the PC and Amiga. If you can go for as big a card as possible, you'd be surprised just how quickly the card can fill from all those WHD installs

The Backplate CF adaptor Amigakit sells are excellent. Means you can replace the CF card without wear and tear on the case. Then a PCMCIA to CF card arrangement is great for transferring files, if you don't want to setup a network.
You don't need a harddrive if you have a CF internally or on that CF backplate, it is instead of a hard drive.
Red screen I thought was ROM error. Ah yes it is. Source.
Not sure why that would only appear when putting the HDD on, unless its not connected correctly (offset pins on the IDE connector or reversed perhaps, or there is something electronically wrong with the HDD, or perhaps it is drawing too much power for the power brick you are using...
