The nightly build dated 2017-03-24 is bootable and installable under VMWare, no need for debug switches. Time to play!

Good to hear it is working better now.

PS. The CPU usage is not working correctly under QEmu. There, the CPU wakes instantly from the sleep without even waiting for an interrupt. On vmware (and real HW) it should work much better :)

@deadwood

I can understand it being a hassle. Will the monthly posts on the homepage continue? It seems to be stuck on November.

@deadwood

Thanks deadwood. It's been a joy to follow the AROS progress.
Will have to start checking the github history again.

Best regards,

@g01df1sh

That question can be answered only by Paolo Besser, author of Icaros :)

@g01df1sh

I assume that 64bit is not just recompiling but it will certainly happen

Has anyone been successful at getting audio and networking running yet? No success with either under VMWare or VBox. Great progress so far though. I've enjoyed playing with these SMP builds.

and i assume that the problem is aros software pool which usually has been compiled as x86 binaries. the more source code is included in contribs and ports, the easier the transition will be.

I have a single life only, so I can follow the develpment of a single platform only. The quick answer is yes: some day Icaros will switch from current single-core ABIv0 i386 platform to multi-core ABIv1 x86-64 architecture, basically redoing everything from scratch (and maybe adjusting some old habits).

I'm slowly and calmly setting up a dev environment to compile AROS x64 builds on my own computer, which is needed to start. My first step will be releasing a core distribution including AROS software, available contrib files and available software compiled for x64. It won't be a 'catch all' policy however, since I need to include just what I can get fastly re-compiled when the ABI changes or new commits break compatibility with compiled binaries. This will depend, of course, on other developers availability.

A x64 tiny distro which will allow basic operations, like playing mp3/video files, compiling your own sources, chatting on IRCA and browsing the web, is what I am talking about. There's really no point into creating a whole big distro now, because too much things would need continuous maintenance, and it would be really overkill. In the meanwhile, I will continue developing the current ABIv0 - 32bit branch.

Can 32bit AROS binaries execute on 64bit AROS? If not, why?

@paolone

A minimal x86 distribution to 'play' with would be a very much appreciated stop-gap up until ABI1 is finalised and the various applications can be properly moved over to it. I just hope two* key 'external' applications, YAM and Hollywood, can make this jump successfully.

Cheers,
Nigel.

*MUIBase woukd be a third, but maybe not quite so important.
