Def_icons and MPlayer Summer edition.

I have set up MPlayer as the default tool on def_asf and def_cdxl, and also created def_fli, def_flv, def_m4v, and def_mp4, all with MPlayer as the default tool.

This is on OS4.1FE running on an A1XE-G3 800mhz.

If I double click a .mp4 file nothing happens.
If I manually launch MPlayer and select the .mp4 file it plays fine.

So I am missing something. to enable me to double click a .mp4 video and get it to play automatically.

Does anyone know what I am not doing, to get this working?

Thanks.

Oh! I booted back in to update 6, and got the same behaviour there, so it's something I haven't sorted out before FE.

@Swoop

I just setup an icon for an AVI with default tool appdir:mplayer

didn't work.

So I changed the the start from to shell then it did work. Dump muich to much junkl inot the console for my likeing, but that may have been due to the digy AVI I chose at random to test with.

Hi Andy, a great insight.
I changed a .mp4 file to start from shell, instead of the default workbench, and I got the execute file requester. Select execute and the video plays.
I then unselected prompt for input on the .mp4 file and MPlayer plays the file straight away.
Great result, but it is likely to be a pain to do this for every video file, before they can be played.

I thought you were working with deficons? You'd only need to unclick the prompt for input button for the def icon once, and save it.

Unless ouy have a large number of real icons in which case, yes that would be a pain.

Is your deficon setup working correctly to the extent that it provides an icon for the relevant files?

If not, does OS4's deficon system still need some recognition rules setting up manually?

Briliant, that was it!

I looked at the .mp4 dile and the icon said cdxl, so I looked a the def icon for .mp4 and that was the same, and I probably duplicated the cdxl def_icon to create he .mp4 one.

Any way o check if def icons was working, I downloaded the latest AmigOS icons from OS4Depot and copied the mp4 def_icon image to the def_icon. rebooted and the original .mp4 file still had the cdxl icon. Used workbench icon/info deleted the icon, and the correct def-icon was shown.
Now double clicking the .mp4 file plays it straight away..
Problem solved.

Thanks to both you and Andy for your help.

@Swoop

Glad its working.

Fyi Thomas seems to have done a decent guide to setting up deficons here, (although i'd personally describe that colour scheme as 'hideous' ).

My problem is that I have the default icon for mp4 set to mplayer. Once I click on a mp4 file it open correctly mplayer gui but does not start playing the movie. I have to drop the mp4 icon in the mplayer gui to start the movie.

any hint?

Thanks for that Rich.

set up .flv and .m4v in Deficons prefs and we're up and running.

Are you talking about MPlayer. or MPlayerGUI by Deniil?

With MPlayer -

1. Open up Env-Archive/sys
2. Select icon/information on the def_mp4 file.
3. Change the default tool to your location of MPlayer
4. Change Start from to shell.
5. Unselect prompt for input.
6. Save

7. Open Prefs/deficons
8. Under Filetypes scroll down to video
9. Select Add
10. Put mp4 in the name field and press return.
11. Under Actions select Add/PATTERN
12. In the pattern box enter #?.mp4
13. Select save

Make sure your .mp4 file does not have an icon.
You will then need to re-boot you Amiga, and then double click your .mp4 file to have it play.

@Swoop

I just read your PM, you're asking me for help on the MPlayer summer edition.
That’s an old version of MPlayer, I don't support it. I recommend you upgrade to LiveForIt-Mplayer.

But I can give you some pointers.

Go prefs folder
Go to deficons prefs program.
On left side of window, you have the datatypes.
Find the one for videos group, and double click on it, go to icon tab, and check its appdir:mplayer,
On start from select "Shell", and you should not need the "Prompt for input",
next you try to double click on all the movie formats under that sub group, if the icon information window don't open, then definition in deficons prefs don't have a icon.
