Quite a loss. Okay, it was a rough place and many/most posts were using a non andequate language and so on, but it was a place for free speech. I hope something similar will come up again. A free and unbiased forum.
Substitues? Not really. Most close probably amigaforum.de - it's more open than most others, but still far from what moo was.

@itix
Nutsaboutamiga was usung the id Kjetil on ann.lu. Wrote quite some posts there.

And I agree ann.lu was brilliant.

Well, he does not like what was going on there, but did have time or did not care before, now something has changed. I am sure he will not allow the same kind of behavior if it reopens, he needs to put a lot more work into security, if he likes to be in control of the site in the future.

@Zylesea

For being a simple news site, it was rally popular, one of the problems with ann.lu was that it was impossible to know if there was real news or rumors posted, rumors are as informative as FUD or a lie. Having a system where anyone where able to post in your name or where able to hide behind different nicknames. Made the site a haven for trolls.

Moo Bunny Amiga Section, though it has acquired a nasty reputation and has spent the last decade largely being an utter hellhole, is still valuable enough that someone just tried to steal it. I think that means it's also valuable enough to not stay down forever.

Signs of life!

@NutsAboutAmiga

You can post behind different nick names here and news and information posted here can be considered fud or rumors as well. This site is a heaven for trolls just like anything else.

Yes, but it is a lot more effort.

You need to register a user account, when the user account is banned; you need yet again register a new one, at some point you get an IP ban. I am not sure if you can use the same e-mail address on many users accounts, so maybe you need a few e-mail accounts as well.

Sure, the quality of site depends on how active the moderators are, no doubt. Sure, it is better if people learn to self-moderate, but there is always people who look for trouble.

If you like to post in someone else's name on Amigaworld.net you need to be a hacker, you can't just type a nick, and post. Yes, I know there was possible to reserve nicks on ANN.lu, that that was all, it was not a proper log in system.

It also depends on what moderators consider inappropriate. 15 years ago here on AWN users could get banned because they were critical to Amiga Inc. Today you are allowed to trash talk Amiga Inc without getting banned.

That is only possible because moderators were changed. Users have not changed, you and me have been here almost 15 years now.

At ANN we were discussing Articia S bugs, fall of Thendic, Amiga Inc coupon scheme, MorphOS 1.5 problems, Hyperion's future plans and about everything what was interesting to Amiga community. At AWN and also at a.org you could only pick subset of topics for discussion. Or should I say, for debate. Debate is something what is not really well approved in Amiga community...

If community members never expressed their doubts and fears gems like this were not possible. It is one of the best threads in the Amiga community in many years.

Apart from the obvious abuses of Moobunny system of
moderation thing I liked most there is the ability to post
without your name and IP , never ever did that myself
but I liked the fact that you wouldn't know from which
"side" other person is posting so the topics that didn't
affect any side too much could be discussed freely.

@blizz1220

Well, thats what baffles me with the "amiga" scene, there has to be "sides".

You would think the arguments people put forward would stand on their own merits, not credited/discredited depending on which "side" a poster belongs to.

If someone, regardless of forum layout, completely disregard the arguments merely on "side" grounds, then that person isnt really worth discussing with.
In that respect, it doesnt matter if its Moobunny, Amigaworld.net, Amiga.org, Amigaforum.de etc..

Not that anyone here even remotely cares what I think (and I've sent this to John) but I tip my hat to John for making difficult decision, and also for his dedication to at least letting the Moo self-exist for all those years.

For as bad, and as useless as the Moobunny eventually became, it was still an interesting place to see certain people self-flagellate on a regular basis.. This is just another example of the Amiga community imploding under the weight of a few bad apples.

Yes, I know I'm mixing metaphors but I sometimes wonder whether walking away from AO would have been the better part of valor, but that's a decision I didn't want to make at the time.

I wish him luck in future decisions.

@Morphix

I sincerely hope it does, but I hope that John takes the time to build in user accounts and authentication to make it less of a playground for the frankos out there. Trouble is, if he did build all that in, would anyone return?

As I recall, Ann.lu was retired shortly after installing user authentication due to a lack of interest from those who felt they shouldn't be bothered with such trivialities..

At its height, Moobunny was at least a gathering of the intelligent and helpful (if not snobby) crowd that hovered around the Amiga. That was several years ago though, before all the spammers and nutjobs decided to take it over and spread their hate and homophobia..
