Setting up e-uae on Ubuntu

I have decided to try setting up e-uae on Ubuntu for the first time, so that I can use AmiKit with it.

So far I've managed to download the sourcecode for e-uae, build it on my system, and run it. It was quite a bit of faffing about to persuade e-uae to run at all, but eventually I figured out that I needed to point it to a valid Amiga rom using the config file and now I am greeted with the familiar floppy disk screen.

The thing is, according to the AmiKit instructions, e-uae is supposed to start with a setup GUI. I cannot get this setup GUI to appear. There is a line in the config file which reads: "use_gui=yes" and this is supposed to do the trick, but for me it doesn't - it just goes straight into Amiga emulation.

If I try removing the reference to the Amiga ROM from the config file then I get the same problem as I started with; e-uae won't run.

Has anyone here managed to setup AmiKit using e-uae on Linux, preferably a recent Ubuntu version? If so, and you are willing to share some advice, that would be great!

Thanks!

@BrianHoskins

I used to install E-UAE from the Ubuntu repository, but it started segfaulting a couple years ago, and I see that Ubuntu has since removed it.

You can still get packages from Debian. Sometimes these run on Ubuntu, sometimes not.

https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=uae

I've been using FS-UAE for the past year or so, and I really like it.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/fs-uae

None of this solves your current problem, but at least you have alternatives.

Forget about E-UAE, use FS-UAE instead, it's way better. The official page has instructions for installing it on Ubuntu:

@cgutjahr & @bison

Thanks very much for the advice; I didn't know about fs-uae. It looks like e-uae is abandonware, having not been updated since 2007. fs-uae, on the other hand, is still being actively maintained.

I have installed fs-uae and I've managed to install AmiKit with it.

So far the results are very disappointing; the speed is painfully slow. I have enabled JIT via the advanced settings too.

I know the problem is not my PC because a) my PC is very fast and b) I had AmiKit running from the Windows platform on here (before I swapped to Linux full time about 6 months ago) and it was really fast.

@BrianHoskins

I find Amikit to be quite slow on my I7 machine too, running on Linux Mint. I think the emulation is running true Amiga4000/040 speeds as its no slower than my real A4000 and its also worth noting that if you are using the 64bit build then the JIT will not function as it currently only works on 32bit builds.

Thanks for the response @Arnie.

Yes I was thinking along the same lines; that it's no quicker than a real Amiga. In fact I would say it's a bit slower than my real Amiga. I'll have to try a basic 3.1 system though for a proper comparison.

That's good information about the JIT; I didn't know that.

Well, it looks like I must abandon the idea of UAE on Linux as it's not currently a viable solution. I might even have to create a Windows partition just to run Amiga Forever on it.

Decided to see if I could run Windows in a virtual machine and then run Amiga Forever on that. It works of course, but the problem is the mouse isn't captured properly and is unusable.

I guess it is asking too much to expect the Amiga to capture the mouse from Windows 7 which is capturing the mouse from Ubuntu!

There must be a way to get this working properly on Linux surely. I am willing to persevere, but I would like to hear from someone who has had success first so I know I'm not wasting my time.

Any one want to volunteer a successful experience with e-uae or fs-uae on Linux? I define "successful" as a working fully loaded system (e.g. AmiKit) with very high speed emulation.

Don't know why your having problems. I run uae on puppy linux (32 bit) and its fast and stable and a joy to use. I don't think the jit works on 64 bit, so that may be the problem. I have seperate hdf files for amiga os 3.1, 3.9, amigasys, and amikit.

For a time I had a dedicated amiga emulation machine on a spare pc this way which booted straight to amikit. Any 3.0ghz pentium+ machine should be great for an emulation system. I suggest trying another pc and 32 bit linux.

@haywiresystem

Okay thanks! If the reason really is the lack of JIT support on 64-bit, I think I'm going to have to wait until it's fixed.

Nobody is working on this problem, your waiting could be long.

@pavlor

I agree that my wait could be long, because nobody is obligated to fix the problem. And that is fair enough. But I don't know that we can say nobody is working on the problem, as fs-uae is at least currently being maintained. So maybe someone is working on it, unless of course you have good reason to believe they are not?

In any case, since the emulation is too slow for my use without JIT (assuming JIT is the sole cause of my trouble), I am going to have to wait for it. But I have no expectations.

Cheers.

68k JIT used in UAE is nearly 15 years old (full of dirty x86 assembly code) and not compatible with 64bit WinUAE/FS-UAE. Someone must create new JIT (like the one for PowerPC CPUs), but that is really hard task. As 32 bit WinUAE works on 64 bit Windows and 64 bit version doesn´t bring great advantages, I don´t see so big need for new JIT. Maybe big enough bounty would motivate capable developer(s)?

Edit: You need UAE for some resource demanding applications or only to play games? Plain OS3.1 installation would serve well latter purpose.

@pavlor

The JIT that Rachy did for e-uae in OS4 is designed to be portable to other architectures with minimal changes, so it shouldn't need to be re-written from scratch.

Ah okay - thanks for the explanation.

Yes unfortunately I wanted UAE to use it as a convenient development system and also to use for running/testing applications.

I run Windows7x64/Netrunner64/and Mint KDE 64 and all have
AmiKit on them and work great.I installed AmiKit first on Windows
and then copied AmiKit to .wine/drive_c. Once in awhile,not sure why,
I will get 2 cursors on the linux AmiKit desktop but just recopy my
winuae config from windows to linux and fixed.
This is my Amigod 1 results from windows,have not run it on Linux
yet

Have you tried WinUAE on Wine for Linux? I have heard that it is still faster than FS-UAE. May or may not work but worth to try at this point.

@Amigamia and @alanwall

Thanks for the replies both,

I hadn't even considered running WinUAE with wine. I would have assumed that it wouldn't work! I will definitely have to try it.

I've now installed the x86 version of fs-uae and it is much better. It still isn't as fast as I remember the experience on WinUAE, but it is at least use-able now.

The 64-bit build was totally pointless; for anyone else trying this, don't bother with the 64-bit packages, get the 32-bit version instead.

Here is a link with some basic instructions. It's a bit old but should still work with newer versions

@Amigamia

Thanks for the instructions! I tried to follow them, but I have trouble launching the WinUAE installer. I haven't looked into it too much yet, but I did a quick google search and it seems that my trouble is not specific to WinUAE; other people have had trouble using .msi files under WINE:

Apparently it's a bug in gcc. More info:
