Someone wrote a quick one-line patch for gcc to fix this issue, and I was contemplating how I should go about applying it (not applied a patch before), but then I read that other people had success with the beta version of WINE. I tried the latest beta and it worked for me, so now WinUAE is installed.

Interesting! When I tried the setup, it installed OK. It has been a while and I have re-imaged my pc since. I tried it on Elementary OS which is still Ubuntu based but maybe there is a substantial difference to make it crash. I am going to give it a try this week end and report back.
