Sound card recommendation for SAM460cr?

Howdy,

I am looking for an appropriate sound card for my Sam460cr.

I was out and about and wandered in Currys, not looking for anything in particular, when I came across the Asus Xonar DSX PCIe 7.1 Sound Card.

It seems not to be working but am also unsure if my audio prefs are set correctly on my Sam, is mute still the default on Sam boards?

If mute is the default my card could possibly be working and I don't even know it.

Anyone out there know if the card is not compatible or even how to turn on the audio on the Sam so I can actually check the card.

@1Mouse

Going from memory, I'm sure I had to set up the sound in prefs/ahi prefs.

Cheers

@1Mouse

There is no AmigaOS 4.x driver for the Ausus Xonar cards.

The pciex1 cards in this blog posting work.

@Spectre660

Is Envy24HT the only audio driver for AmigaOS?

@1Mouse

There are only two AmigaOS 4.1 audio drivers that I am aware of that have PCIex1 sound cards models.

Envy24HT and CMI8738 .
The CMI8738 may have some issues when playing videos on the Sam460ex .

@TiredofLife

Experienced under AmigaOS 4.1 update 6 :
A long pause in audio and video playback after normal playback for a few minutes .

Not sure when this started as it was ok in Jan 2014 but was present in Dec 2014 .
The motherboards were different so can't rule out a hardware issue.
The problem occurred both with DVplayer and the newer Mplayer .
I have not tried the CMI sound card under AmigaOS 4.1 FE thus my use of "may" .
Ther was no problem with audio when no video was involved.

@Spectre660

I wasn't aware of that.
i do know that with the Envy card I use, I have to select SDL audio for mplayer
Otherwise youtube vidoes for instance, the sound and video would be out of sync.

Cheers

I've just got used to the onboard graphics, SATA and audio on my Sam440, been a bit spoilt I guess.

Having to track down a SATA controller (PCI), graphics card (PCIe) and sound card (PCIe) is all new to me.

For some reason I already had a PCI SATA controller and getting the pcIe graphics card wasn't too much of a pain thanks to the RadeonHD driver, however sound is another issue altogether.

@1Mouse

It is better to do your research before you buy.
Acube made it easy to get all the required components from their online Shop.
They seem to be out of sound cards now though .

The SB Audigy card is listed as working on the Intuitionbase website.

So I bought an SB Audigy card and it doesn't seem to work.

Anyone know if the SB Audigy FX card works?

@1Mouse

no it does not. The pciex1 version uses a different chipset to the older pci version.
Refering you back to post #6 .

Got myself a sound card and is great, however I am having audio issues.

The sound plays for a while then a section of audio repeats until I move the mouse and it continues to play ok for a while and this goes on only playing ok after moving the mouse.

I get this effect with mp3s and in game audio.

ps what do I need to play mp3s through Tunenet?

@everyone

I've got three different and tested PCIe cards on my desk, ready to being added to my Webshop. Going to do this this evening... So please have a look later today on my Website for the Details and pricing. Section HARDWARE>SOUND CARD.

In the meantime I can already tell, that some are 16 Bit Hifi and some are 32 Bit HiFi with the following chipsets:

- Via VT1723
- Cmedia CM8738

Regards
Marcus

@MARCOM

The card I have in uses the CM8738 chipset and should work just fine.

What are the possible reasons for the stuttering?

Wish it was as easy as it was with the onboard sound on the Sam440.

Don't know if it's the card, the AHI prefs or a combination of the two or possibly some other reason.
